Charcoal canister delete?
#1

I've been dealing with hesitation and fuel issues for the last couple of months. I've had the fuel pump die, and a replacement pump die 2 days later. I've replaced the fuel sender, fuel screen in the tank, and fuel filter. It looks like my tank is slightly dented possibly caused by suction/bad venting. I've taken the fuel filler neck apart and don't see any issues there, hoses look fine and clear of debris. I just looked at the charcoal canister and when I took off the bottom hose fuel and charcoal leaked out, the car has been sitting for a month. From what I've read this means the charcoal canister is bad and possibly a valve too which allowed fuel to get in.

Seems like many 944 owners have removed the charcoal canister, vacuum lines, plugged hoses, and added a filter for venting. Has anyone done this on a 968? What do I use to plug the hoses and vacuum lines? Which line do I put a filter on, from the canister the bottom hose or the top? What kind of filter do I use?

I understand what I am doing to the emissions system, I have been exempt from emissions testing for the past 4 years plus I may be turning this into a track car.

Thanks

I removed all this stuff when I went to a dry break filler on my race car. It's so long ago I don't remember all the details, but basically everything can be deleted/removed or plugged. You end up with just a feed and a return line from the tank to the fuel rail. You just need to come up with a way to vent the tank to atmosphere. I have an ATL discriminator valve on my vent lines but that won't work so well on anything near stock.

The system should be very similar to what is on late 944's so what worked there should also on a 968.

What did you use to plug/cap the extra lines that aren't needed? A local shop told me to put a screw in the tubes to plug them, but for some reason it doesn't seem like the best idea.

I've always been a fan of golf tees <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/rolleyes.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

If you want to plug the hose(s), I would recommend a stainless steel screw of some sorts. Then I would use a ty-wrap to secure the hose around the screw.

That would be my second choice. First choice would be to "cap" the port where the hose originates.

I beleive a correctly sized bolt and a hose clamp is proper ghetto technique. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/biggrin.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> You can get barbed brass fittings and caps at hardware stores.

Depending on how much you remove, there is not much to plug. I removed everything, including the stock fill tube so I didn't need to plug anything. There is a vacuum line in the engine bay to cap - any autoparts store will sell caps for those.

Eric, what did you do to the Intake port that goes to the charcoal canister? I've found all the other lines and there isn't much to cap off.

I can't recall what port off the intake went to the canister. Was it the one low on the side? If it is, I plugged it with a barbed fitting and a threaded cap. Bought at Home Depot, I think.
