Ceramic Coating of the exhaust
#1

I was watching Wheeler Dearlers last night, with a total rebuild of the engine etc of a 1960'S English sports car. After removing the Engine and the Exhaust, they had the Exhaust Ceramic Coated. They claimed the benefits as follows..

1)  Less Heat under the engine.

2) A reported 6% gain in HP.

Is this realley possible and could one do this easily on a cat back system from RS Barn?

You might see some benefits (not 6 HP) if you were to coat the header as well as the cat back..the heat shield probably provided 95% of the same benefits.

When we had the header ceramic coated on our race car, the benefit we were going for was heat control. If there was any HP benefit, it was likely because they do some pretty fancy smoothing and de-burring of the inside of the header prior to coating. I predict that made as much difference as the actual coating did.

Fun fact, it peeled off in several places leaving jagged edges that probably cost the car power. I suspect the technology is better than it was years ago, but my analysis of the whole ceramic coating mania was that it was not worth the cost. It also came off the tops of the pistons and trashed the bores, requiring new sleeves. If there were any HP gains, for us it was brief and prohibitively expensive.

you cannot ceramic coat a catalytic converter.

coating the cat-back will have no real positive effect.  the header is a different story.  if it is done right, and you smooth out he insides of the tubes, and coat the header inside and out, you can gain some scavenging, which can increase power, though i have never seen it be more than a couple of horsepower on any engine.  how much depends on cam timing, flow rates, the collector design, and the rest of the system design.

there are only 2 places in the country that i would trust to do the coating job.  one (engineered applications) is here in los angeles.  the other i think is in ohio, and i can't remember their name right now.  they did the bearings on my engine though, and did a good job.  i've also seen a header they did, and it was fine.  you are looking at about $200, plus shipping.  this does not include any of the internal prep work.
