I will need to be moving, and will probably not have a garage. I live in RI. I have a light cotton/flannel cover to use in the garage, but I need a suggestion for a cover for outside, including those New England Winters.

But I don't currently have a garage and so I use the following.

My car was clean as a whistle, it rained on my covered car for a week and when I took the cover off, the car looked exactly like it did when I covered it.



I will be renting a garage come winter, but this is the best I can do for now and am very happy with the results.

they do not recommend a bright color cover on a light color car



what does this tell you?



you got lucky - from experience, i can tell you that covers ruin paint when used in the rain - use one in the rain at your own risk - over the course of a winter, you will see splotchy color changes - this will really show up on black, in the form of light spots

I purchased the Weathershield Covercraft car cover a year ago and used it throughout the fall and winter. I don't have a garage either.



Mine is the light gray color cover on a black car. After heavy rains, it does spot up under the cover a bit, but does not leave permanent marks.



One BIG problem though. Even after washing the cover, if it is windy at all, the cover will flap. Especially with the heavy thunderstorms and winter storms this past year. This leaves tiny scratch marks 2-4 inches long on the sides of the car. These do not buff out easily, some are now permanent!(at least until i get it professionally buffed out) I even tried to weigh down the cover to try and prevent this, but due to the slipperiness of the cover matieral, nothing really stays on.



So, i try not to use the cover at all now. Probably only will use in the winter with snow. It is a shame as i wanted to use it during the summer months when the heat beats down on the car and wears the paint and rubber.



If i had to do it over again, i would buy the cheapest fitted outdoor cover and use only in the winter. Waste of money otherwise for outdoor use.

here's a question:



what's wrong with leaving it exposed in the rain? why cover it? is it water spots? leaks? i don't get it



the car is watersealed (or should be) - the paint is impervious to water (at least if you have a good coat of wax on it) - covers leave scratches, and i've definitely seen permanent discoloration - i myself now had 2 paint jobs completely ruined, one suit trashed, been late, frustrated, and wet countless times when dealing with the cover, and seen a half dozen other paint jobs trashed



i see the advantages of covering it against exposure to dust (albeit at the expense of potential wind damage) - but frankly, i look forward to the rain on the car that i have to park outside - it's cleaner after the rain than before - if i covered it, it would be a muddy mess, and then you have a nasty dirty wet cover to deal with when you want to get into the car



this is the fall down on covers - the car has to be clean and dry before you put the cover on - it seems like a huge hassle to me, with nothing but damage and frustration for your troubles - i've wrestled with this one myself over the years - owning cars that leak has led me to seek solutions - nothing has worked well



can somebody explain to me why you would cover it in the rain? what is the advantage?

Hadn't really thought of it that way. Rain does help get the worst of the dust off, but Its the wind and driving rain that worries me.



All in all, I am more concerned about stone chips when driving than rain on my uncovered car.

Big storm last night and the winds blew the cover right off!!



It is another unanticpiated expense, but I have decided to rent a garage as I feel the car is to important, too rare and too beautiful to leave outside.



At least until I find a Porsche-loving girl that has a house with a garage to marry me.

I have the Severe Weather cover from Auto-Chic. I do not have a garage and there have been periods of a few weeks during which the car remained covered. This has been true in the winter as well in the summer incliuding wild thunderstorms. It has always stayed on tightly without doing anything other than putting it on. My car is guards red and I want to protect it from the sun. I know it does not need rain protection. In the two and a half years I have owned the cover, I have had no problems at all with the paint. No discoloration, no scratching from the wind either. I am absolutley thrilled with the cover. Flash's comment that the car has to be clean is true, but using a dust brush and or Griot's speed shine has made that problem less of one. This cover is a tight custom fit and cost $250. I think it is an excellent value.
