Cam Cover Bolts
#1

For those of you getting ready to open up your cam cover, think about replacing the bolts. They are not meant to last the life of the car and they will snap if they have been torqued down to many times or over torqued. I just snapped a short one while re-torquing it down, which is only 7 ft/lbs.

The problem is Porsche thinks there short bolts are really special, to the tune of around $30 vs. the not so special long ones that sell for around $8. Add up 5 bolts at $30 apiece and it gets pretty crazy. Fortunately a well known 928 vendor to care of this issue and has them made up by a local machine shop and cad plated like the originals for only $10 a piece. They look exactly the same with the exception of the head of the bolt doesn't have the slight taper at the top like the original, which you really can't notice on the car.

New short bolt on left, new long bolt on right.

You can get them all from 928's R Us. Either send them an email at sales@928srus.com or call them at 817-430-2688. They don't currently have them on their website, they are still getting that fully up to speed.

928.104.111.01 Short Bolt - $10 QTY 5 (Note PET says 4, but my car has 5)

928.104.117.01 Long Bolt - $8.67 QTY 8 (Note PET says 9, but my car has 8)

928.104.116.00 Washer - $.89 QTY 13 (If you want new shiny ones to go with your new shiny bolts)

928.104.115.02 Rubber Seal - $1.76 QTY 13 Rubber Seal

So you're saying you can get them in a "snap"?

I can confirm the snapping part, as my car is currently at the shop to (among other things) have a snapped bolt removed and replaced. It's a long one btw so I got one new OEM. I wanted to replace the lot but the Porsche prices made me reconsider that. Might jump on this thing later. Have to invest in a good torque wrench first
