Harley Fatboy for Boxster Swap - Should I go for it?
#21

Well, not everyone walks into a 5K Porsche. Aside from the cost, the restoration went pretty easy...I found the car, waited two years for her to sell the car.

Then found the only decent shop in the south east to rebuild the transaxle right the first time...the cash flow worked well between paychecks so I put none of it on plastic...

so yea, comparatively speaking it was easy. I just get impatient - lol

Did social work in the past but actually a retired professional photographer. I am the house husband. Wife still works. I retired about 12 years ago lol

Yea it works for us. Other people don't get it but it's great. She brings the paycheck and I do everything else.

Cooking, cleaning, pet care, laundry, yard, cars, bills, everything.

Most guys couldn't handle not bringing home the bacon, but I am cool with it - lol

It's a great gig if you can get it.

Glad to see others chimed in quickly about the IMS bearing issue with some of the early Boxters. If you find one that was built in 2000 or later, then you should be OK.

Nope, the problem continued to a lesser degree until the new engine family in 2009. This is true for 911's as well. Currently there is a class action suit against Porsche regarding this problem.

You would think that as long as Porsche has been building cars, that they would be able to build a decent engine - Jeez.

Yea I found out about the lawsuit - our whole transaxle thing - I tell you, it would make me pause before buying a new one at 150K a pop or more.

no class action lawsuit ever filed for the pinion bearing problem <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/glare.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> ( i guess the % of afflicted cars was way too small to qualify for an " epidemic failure " category ) the boxster thing must be a lot more common..and of course there are so many boxsters out there compared to 968s, there's a lot more owners who can complain or willing to take some action

correct. while they admitted there was a problem, and repaired many of them under warranty, and others as a good will gesture, no official position was taken.

porsche is no different, and really no better at controlling quality than anybody else. in fact, they may be worse. they have refused to correct design flaws for years, and instead move them from one model to the next. so, i am not surprised at the problems
