I hope that you are all enjoying a happy Holiday Season.

 

This is a bittersweet time for my wife and I. We completed the renovation of our home for the past 30 years in order to make it ready for sale. This will be last holiday season we spend in a community that we have lived in for 38 years.

 

Fixed a Tuscan dinner last night. Arista, winter squash ravioli in sage butter, green beans, rosemary potatoes. Opened an 8 year old Antinori Guado al Tasso Vermantino to serve with the salumi, olives and cheese. Poured an Elio Altare

<p class="">Barolo DOCG 2004, Piemonte with dinner. Vin Santo, fresh pears and biscotti for desert.

Now that dinner sounds heavenly !!

And for whatever it's worth , I know several couples who have moved from what was a " life-long " house and community they loved, and none of them look back with regret, just with fondness and great memories. You will enjoy the new phase of your life no matter where you end up. ( BTW, have you decided between the two choices you were contemplating ? )

In an inexplicable way perhaps, things always manage to work out as well, if not even better than before . And in a funny confidence to your Tuscan reference , we just came back from a brief Manhattan trip last week and the lady who sat next to us on the plane told us that she had moved ( having recently retired ) just about three months ago from California to Tuscany . She was flying back to San Francisco to tie up a few loose ends of paperwork , but what I found surprising is that neither her husband nor her had any roots , or for that matter not even any acquaintances in Italy ..they simply chose Tuscany after vacationing there and decided that's where they want to spend the next phase of their golden years or the rest of their lives. Did not speak a word of Italian but they both signed up for courses. If I had to guess she was in her mid-late sixties .

Lol, we know someone else on this forum who took a huge leap of faith moving away from a decades-log familiarity and comfort zone. ;-) ;-)

We could go either way actually. I've also looked some homes on line in the Reno area. In the next month we'll visit Oregon, New Mexico,and possibly Reno as well.

I've been giving serious though to letting the wine making go. The idea that, at age 71, the primary motivation for relocating to a specific area hoping that I can land a job is probably foolish. Landing a job as a winemaker or even as an assistant winemaker absent any connections in Oregon is a long shot at best. But now that the house is done and the Holidays are nearly done I can really focus on what is next for us.
