Broke down, alternator pulley nut lost
#1

Hi,

Anyone know the exact size specs of the alternator pulley nut? If I can find a replacement I can fix it

According to PET it's a M16x1.5, there is also a lock washer behind it. The nut is 900.034.013.02 and the washer is N.012.016.1

This forum is great and the help is outstanding. I've just added another addition to my spare parts list book with the alternator pulley nut and washer. I hope I never have to use it, but now I have the stock numbers.

Cheers,

Larry

My pulley was destroyed in the process too, along with the alternator spindle threads

The 928 part num for our pulley was discontinued ages ago

Another option I'm checking and I'll report back if I can obtain a pulley for this alternator

That is, the new alternator from AutoZone did not have a pulley so I swapped over my original

Thanks

Parts guy at Sonnen porsche sez the 944 used the same alternator, and that pulley 944 603 021 01 is still "available" (1 in US. , 1 in germany <roll eyes>)

For @ $90, i ordered it.

Anyone sure if its correct?

Not sure, I know the CS has a 944 part number, I would guess it's a different size to underdrive it.

I have a new alternator (again) and the pulley with the 944 part number. The pulley looks slightly larger than my original, but I need to get the alternator out of the car to really compare them side-by-side.

But, big problem, the extra long upper alternator mount bolt used with the supercharger clashes with the radiator and I can't get it out. (When I was putting the car back together with the new alternator a few weeks ago I had also replaced the radiator so I put that in from below after getting the alternator and supercharger set in place)

I've already taken the fans out to make more room for pete sake.

***please*** tell me I don't have to drain and remove the radiator just to get the supercharger out of the way so that I can finally remove the alternator!? Oh boy, such fun :0/

Watching this thread with great interest, because even flash well known for his " it's a ten minute job " assertions which somehow always translate to 5 X that much for mere mortals , lol, admitted that one of the jobs which is bound to be a PITA on our supercharged cars is the replacement of the alternator. And with the bearings on my tip's alternator being as loud as they are when cold , that's going to be something to deal with in the not too distant future . Ugh, not fun.

Thanks Dan, sounds like yes i will need to at least move the rad a bit. Will try to do that now without disconnecting hoses but it doesn't look promising

Be extra careful with the screws at the top of the radiator bracket mount - don't ask me which one, where exactly they're located because I don't recall specifically - but there have been a couple of instances of the radiators having being pierced by the screw when they were reinstalled ( on SC'd cars ). Mine included ! One of the screws ends up less than 1 mm away from the radiator , IF you're lucky...so either a shorter screw is needed or the tip blunted so it does not poke a hole in the radiator. Flash can explain where and what needs particular attention and the solution , so if you're unaware of this issue, best to contact him..absent anyone else familiar with this reads the post and responds here.

pulley size has to be exactly the same, or the belt won't work

you can gain some access room by removing the radiator hold down brackets, and then removing the fan assembly and sliding the radiator forward

Well the 944 part number Pulley looks like it might be two or 3 mm larger in Belt travel diameter

At least for my car the radiator holddown brackets already had it pressed up against the AC condenser, no more room to move it any further forward ?

definitely cannot go larger.  don't even try.  a tiny bit smaller would probably be ok though.

Hmm, OK, well that's a bummer about the pulley. That puts me back to sourcing a used Pulley; anybody got one for sale? If not I will try bandits suggestion for a used one. Also will contact Oklahoma foreign. But It means I'm definitely not driving the car home this weekend as I had hoped.

To get the alternator out I disconnected the bottom of the lower hose, at the radiator. Let it drain, then was able to move the bottom of the radiator back off the lower support bracket and letting it drop down at a angle which gave enough clearance to remove the upper alternator mount bolt. Then I also needed to disconnect the upper hose at the water neck and tip it up out of the way leaving it connected to the top of the radiator. This provided just enough room to wiggle the alternator out.

Heres the pulleys side by side

Alternator 6 rib Pulley for 968 (NLA) on the right

928 603 021 01

154 mm top-of-rib circumference

Ribs approx 50 mm dia

55 mm max outer rim diameter

Available 6 rib pulley 944 603 021 01

Stamped C 120 936 342 on surface

178 mm circum.

Ribs approx 56 mm dia

61 mm max outer rim diameter

I'm going to try to reuse the original pulley, if the fit is ok. The picture makes the hole seem a little oblong, but that's only at the outer surface.

the problem you face is that the belt barely gets over the pulley as it is. there is no room for a larger pulley, because you'll never get the belt on.
