Belt & Roller Changeout Parts
#1

I am getting set up to change out the leaking water pump on my 968 and had some questions on sourcing parts and "other" work that I should do when I have the front of the motor exposed.

There are 3 or 4 suppliers that advertise parts in Panorama or Excellence, and I was wondering if their parts are as good as OEM? In particular, there is a firm on Ebay right now offering a belt and roller kit for $180. Does anyone have an opinion of these items?

At minimum, I plan on changing out all the belts (balance shaft, camshaft, and accessory), and replacement of the belt rollers. Obviously, I will change out the water pump and the thermostat. But, should I change out all the seals while in there? The seals I'm thinking of are the balance shaft seals. And, should I consider replacing the camshaft belt auto tensioner?

Lastly, how different, for the 944, is changing out the camshaft belt on the 968? Since the car has an automatic belt tensioner, is there anything other than making certain that the motor is at TDC and the camshaft markings properly aligned?

Thanks in advance.

Here's a message that I posted about a year ago. I've installed most of the parts not but I didn't use several of the parts. And some parts were for something besides the 968. BTW, there's a 968 roller I bought that is listed on the PET but there's no place on the 968 to mount the roller. Case of parts list being printed before the car was manufactured i guess. At any rate, they sold me the roller. Not sure what else it might fit. But it's a start when trying to figure out what all you might need. I could have gotten by with much less but I want my car to last a long time w/o tearing the front off again.

I recently ordered a bunch of parts to update many of the "wear" parts on my 1994 968. The following parts have been delivered but I've not yet installed them. In fact, I can get by and may not even need all of them but, while I'm in there, I thought "Why not?" Sooner or later they will wear out and after almost 70k miles, I might as well. Can you do a similar update cheaper? Absolutely as I'm also replacing bolts and gaskets, etc. that may still be fine. These are all Porsche parts or Porsche OEM. I just thought the list might be interesting to those of you who are looking for a listing and get confused between 944 parts lists and 968 lists. The dealer checked this list over and made some changes so I'm banking on it being accurate.

The following prices are what were charged to me on 4/28/05 and subject to change and do not include handling charges, freight/shipping, rush orders from Germany, etc (For me, that was about an additional $150.00 or so). Different dealers will have differing prices and, in some cases, there may be product quality differences. Almost all of the above parts were purchased from a Porsche dealership. No guarantees are made as to accuracy of the list. I'm not a great typist. Please double-check with the PET listings and the dealer you work with before ordering. Also, you may not want all these parts but here they are just in case. Good luck on your belt and waterpump rebuild!
