Gummy Starter Syndrome (GSS) Repair
#21

The wires tend to get brittle and fray causing "interesting" starting conditions. As DS said, rebuilts are fairly cheap and easy to install.

When I got my car originally in 2010 my starter was not in great shape. Sunsets price on an OEM starter was around $600. So I went to AUTOZONE and bought a new starter with lifetime guarantee for around $125.  Did not have to do an extensive rebuild Just took out the old one and put the new one in. Simple even for a non mechanic like myself.

The only warning is there is a trird bolt at around position 1:00 or 2:00 that when covered with road grime is not easy to see or locate, when the car is up on jack stands. When I took out the 2 other bolts which were easy to see. It drove me nuts because the starter would not come out. Eventually I found that 3rd bolt. Then It was then easy to disassemble and reinstall.

Sunset says they need to come from Germany and would run @ $450. Pelican has rebuilt bosch starters for @ $250. Autozone claims to have rebuilt boschs for $105. Has anyone that bought the autozone starters had a problem with them? I can get it by Wednesday from them. Thanks

Where do you get the parts for a rebuild?

From my local auto electrical supplier

I can get you some parts if you wish I only do the manual starters as the auto gearbox (Tiptronic) ones are cheap as chips

Nothing wrong with my starter motor, but when it brakes down, I'll know what do do :-)

You said 'auto ones'? What's that?
