Auto tipronic.
#1

New to the fab 968 cabriolet i was wondering if there are many auto tiptronics about and if they are rated beter or worse than the manual.

In reliability, the repair cost factor and mpg.

Cripes after looking for a 968 cab for nearly a year, another comes along so i'm tempted to have two.

Bloody greed!

Winger, since I have owned both a Tiptronic and a 6 speed 968 I will give you my opinion. If you drive a lot in heavy traffic the Tiptronic is worth its weight in gold. If you enjoy competitive track events the tip will be a disappointment and the 6 speed, with limited slip differential will be a pure joy. No record of anyone having the "Ring & Pinion Problem" with a Tiptronic yet, so there is an advantage there. (I paid $2500 to have my ring & pinion reshimmed after it started whining like a jet on coast-down after landing). Miles per gallon were a few less with the Tiptronic too, but that depends mostly on how you drive it. Acceleration is a bit slower with the Tip as well but not enough to make me not want one again if I had to drive in heavy traffic a lot. (I am retired and live in New Mexico so traffic is rarely a problem. In my experience they are both excellent Porsche cars to enjoy. good luck, Bob Blackwell.

I have no choice but to drive a Tip due to paralysis in my legs, but I would dearly love to find a way to reprogram the shift software to improve performance (such as a normal first gear takeoff). Regardless, a 4-speed tip will never compete with a 6-speed manual.

Tom - If you are only (mostly) driving in town put it in 3rd. It will start in 1st every time. Shift up to 4th or to tip when you are not driving in stop and go.

Hi Tom.

Congrats on your ride. I am one of the few (or only) currently getting my 93 Coupe Tip track worthy for DE and Time Trials. Recently picked it up as well. Pete at RS Barn has it now and he is putting in a Chip and Cat Back to start, and giving it a once over, adjusting and replacing all the items that normally need attention on these 968s. Who kows, I may even throw in his cam as well if I can continue squeezing some added ponies.

On the Tip, in my humble rookie opinion, a lot has to do with the gearing. The Tip gear Ratios are top=.74, Final=3.25. On the 6 spd: Top=.79, Final 3.78. So what we end up on the tip is a super low (number wise) gearing that really hampers acceleration. On the 6 spd, the boyz should be hitting 155 or so right abt 6,500 rpm on 225/45/16s (plus or minus). Using the same calc, we on the trip, would only be hitting about 5,200 rpm at the same speed (roughly). Obviously it was geared to help fuel economy among other things, but not a good thing on the track. Of course, unless you get a turbo in, and get a little benefit from spooling faster on the RPM and speed curves with the Tip.

I have to ask Pete if there is a way to replace the Final gearing with the one from a 6 spd or buy an aftermarket without mortgaging the condo. I think this mod alone would tremendously improve the Tip's performance. Combined with the ability to concentrate on the lines better and maintain momentum at the track, we may even get to be able to read the license plates on the 6 spds.

I have also been looking at aftermarket reprogramming kits, and have come out empty handed. This trannys are apparently very complex and outside of Porsche factory, I have not heard of anyone that has anything for them. Let me know if you find anything on this front. I'll be right in-line behind you with my eyes closed.

I'll let you know how my car proresponds to the upgrades, and will keep all posted on how my quest to buck the trend on the "too slow around the track 968 titronic" progresses at Pocono Complex this summer.

Pablo

PS: I did read somewhere that the new 99X Turbo matched to the 5 spf Tip was faster around the Road Atlanta Track. But thean again, I have not read the article myself...

Pablo, I agree completely that a numerically higher final drive ratio would be a great improvement. I hope that Pete can help.

How's about dropping in a Chevy 411 posi? <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/laugh.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Kim, I've never noticed this. All the more reason for an excuse for a Sunday afternoon ride to try it out.

Thanks,

Tom

Kim, you're one smart Canadian lady. Sure enough it does take off in first gear when I keep it in 3rd. You'd think I would have noticed this with two cab Tips over 4 years...duhhhh.

After some days out driving in all types of traffic with first the manual and the the tiptronic i am now going to keep both.

As Bob Blackwell has said they are truly great cars with different advantages.

The tiptronic is more relaxed and ideal for the country lanes and city stop go traffic.

The manual seems to be more of a driving car through sweeping bends etc with speed.

Have another prob with the air bag light will put a posting up on that when i sort what is going on.

Picture of both cars, the tiptronic is the one featured in the book "Original Porche" by Peter Morgan, page 102.

Very nice indeed. I have two, a 6 speed coupe and a tip convertable and I enjoy them both.
