Arrived on the east coast!
#1

3am here and just arrived in Boston. Auto transport company delivered the cars 3 days ago. Got a call the day before delivery "concerning the 1994 Porsche...one of the drivers noted that they had scraped the plastic piece under the front bumper."

Okay, no big deal, it happens.

Arrive at 3am to find new scratches on the car for one.

Secondly, the batwing (front apron) has been torn off and is nowhere to be found. It tore through all of the screw holes in the bumper as well, and the bumper feels loose too. I need to get the retail prices together for the bumper cover, lower grille mesh, and the batwing (front apron). Not an awesome end to my trip. Further evaluation tomorrow after I wash the car in the AM.

that sucks - this kind of thing makes me crazy, and exactly why i will only ship covered, and will not allow cross loading - i want to watch it go in the trailer, and know that it isn't moving until i get there on the other end

They must have a school where they teach phrases like "concerning the 1994 Porsche" and "scraping a plastic piece"...how about a little truth telling here???

Then again if they told you the truth you would have been in misery for longer.

I hope this gets resoved to your satisfaction,

Jay

P.S. several years ago, a friend purchased a show condition mid-80's BMW M6, the transport rolled over at an off ramp...I think they might have mentioned "an incident"

Man, sorry to hear about the transport problems, that really stinks.

I had to go through this about 3 years ago, also the batwing (front apron) got torn off. I worked with Sunset Porsche to get all the parts. So, I went through the drawings in the PET to identify all the little screws and brackets and retainers, made a spreadsheet with all the part numbers and quantities. Then I emailed the sheet to Jeff at Sunset (not sure if he is still there), and he inserted prices in the sheet and mailed it back. I attached this spreadsheet here in case it might be useful.

In my case, there were some tears in the mounting holes on the bumper cover where the batwing (front apron) attaches. But the mounting screws use these little metal tabs, they don't screw into the bumper cover directly; these are those flat "nut" where the screw mounts. Anyway, once I slid all of these over the torn holes in the bumper cover, I found that they held well even with a torn out hole. But there were only a few holes torn, not all of them. But you may get away on the repair without trying to fix all the torn out holes on the bottom bumper cover.

Also, I found that the batwing (front apron) mounting points also attached to the plastic fender well liner, actually the front part of the plastic liner. If these mounting points are not present, the fender well liner is loose, and if you drive the car, the plastic will get blown into the wheel and wear away. So please check this before driving the car.

For the story, in my case it was when my son drove the car into a ditch. But that was not what tore the batwing (front apron) off -- it was the tow truck driver that tore it all up. This happened to be a "police accident", so by the time I got there the cops had called a tow truck, lights flashing, traffic rerouted, etc. I talked to the tow truck driver about how to carefully pull out the car, how will be hook it up, what is his plan? His response: "this is not a tow, this is a recovery" which basically means they won't be careful, and dragging the car out and onto the flatbed is when all the damage occurred to the batwing (front apron) and the 2 sharkfins.

Adam - what kind of transport was it on?

That is not awesome. Maybe it's time to replace that floppy batwing (front apron) with some sort of a custom splitter!

Just got my computer set up here at my parents house where we'll be staying for a month or so. I have all of the pictures from the Ortega Run on here and will upload the whole lot in full resolution to a folder on my server, then anyone who wants can grab them.

I'll post up a few shots from the drive across the country here when I get them sorted and edited. Over the 5 days we stopped off at the Grand Canyon, then Arches National Park in Moab, continued on and checked out St. Elmo ghost town in Colorado, Meremac Caverns in Missouri, Falling Water and Kentuck Knob (two Frank Lloyd Wright houses) in Pennsylvania before getting home. It was a long trip!

Talked to the auto shipping company and they said I can bring it to a shop of my choice and have them give an estimate to the shipper. It was shipped in non-covered transport with two of our other cars. PM me if you're interested in who shipped them. Anyway, after looking again at the car I found that the bumper is separated from the fender on the driver side. They really did a number on it. There's also a new scratch on the passenger fender about 1.5cm long. Their paperwork says they don't take responsibility for any scratches/dents/etc smaller than 3 3/4" x 2 1/2" I think. Can't imagine what someone would do if they found something that big on their car and they denied a claim...

I'd love to replace the batwing (front apron) with an integrated splitter, but I know Flash still needs to enjoy driving his car for a while first... Maybe I'll hold off to be the first customer since the car will be sitting in a heated garage for the winter in a month or two anyway.

968syncro, thanks for the list. It will be a big help in ensuring to get all the parts...if I don't wait for a D1R splitter!

Also, now that I'm in Boston...are there any 968 guys in the Boston area or am I alone?!

Brought the car over to my body shop. The owner is a great guy and has helped me and my family with accidents in previous cars a few times. He took a look at the car and almost every one of the scratches they made is through the clear coat and into the paint or through the paint.

They scratched through paint on both front fenders, both doors, rear fender, rear of body above the bumper and rear bumper, he made the estimate for replacement of front bumper and apron, and a full sand/primer/2-stage respray on the panels they scratched. ~$6k for the job. Unfortunately, that's going to leave the hood and roof looking like they need to be repainted as well, which I would have to do out of my own pocket (Maybe another $2-3k more for the whole car).

I sent the estimate to the shipping company and it's been almost a week since they said they would have their independent appraiser come out to review the claim.

The paint really was in good condition before they scratched it, other than the rock chips on the front bumper/fenders/hood and some door dings. I'm at an indecision whether to live with it and try to buff out as much as I can, or to get the whole thing repainted, which I really don't want to pay for.

Adam this sucks! Your car really looked new after our detail day. Wow - does it really run around ten grand to paint a car these days? Sent you an email.

yeah - i am pretty bummed about this too. it is much like my trip to denver a week after i got mine all completely repainted, and picked up over 40 chips from the sand on the road in utah where there was endless construction. it just makes your heart sink.

The insurance company sent out an independent appraiser to the shop last Monday - the shop has worked with him a bunch of times. The shop owner walked him around the car and showed him the damage. He wrote up the estimate and mailed it to me, which I received on Monday of this week.

His estimate is for replacement of the bumper cover and front apron, and repainting of the rear bumper only. Doesn't cover any of the other damage that they did in the process...now, that could be because the shipping company's report for him to look at only said "scraped front bumper plastic." Estimate is for $2700...$3100 short of the shop's estimate.

The shipping company's insurance adjustor said she'll have their decision by Monday.

Sounds like I'm in for some work ahead trying to get them to pay for what they damaged...

Did you take pics of it upon arrival? If so tell the insurance company their adjuster missed it. Every state has an insurance commissioner that complaints can be made to. Insurance companies 1. Have to respond to the request for info from them. 2. Insurance companies internally track grievances filed against them externally- state and internally- company for quality control and monitoring. This doesn't always work but it's a start. Each state has a consumer complaint bureau, often located in the Attorney Generals office. The AG's office is anther good place to use. The idea is to shine a light on the company. Sometimes they can't stand the light of day!
