just got my RS Barn headers, chip, and cat today. thought id make a before and after video. showing cat-back vs the full system.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s8IGx5aSStI...re=channel_page
the muffler ended up getting tilted but is now straightened back out. i didnt notice it until i had the car down... so i couldnt bring myself to fix it before a quick ride down the street
Nice!
So... You got the headers, chip, and cat today, installed them, and then made a video... with captions.
Dude! Shouldn't you be going to class or in the lab or studying or something...
OK, I'm just jealous.

haha.... well yes and no... i have a week off for summer before my next semester soooooo i have all the time in the world to install headers, chip, cat, make a video... with captions. haha
and THE CAR IS NOW AWESOME!!!!!
Now I'm even more jealous
Seriously, though, what do you think about the mods?
It's hard to tell from the video, but the new mods make the car sound deeper, and much better IMO. Is this accurate?
Also, how would you describe the change in power for this latest quantum leap, both in absolute terms, and relative to the previous mods (airbox mod, catback, and stage 1)?
when you make the leap to stage 2 stuff..... the hp increase is even more apparent than when i installed the stage 1 stuff. to mean the sound is just overall cleaner and maybe a slight bit higher pitched. but when you get in the car and hit the gas.... wooooo! it is awesome. the stage one made the car faster.... the stage 2 stuff just plain and simple made the car fast. the powerband i feel is much more linear (i felt my stage 1 stuff had a few flat spots) that is all gone now. you get more power continually all the way to the limiter at 8000.
i wish i could have gotten the stage 2 stuff earlier!
Thanks Joel.
Nice description, and congrats on your upgrade!
Jamie
Hey Joel,
Just stay one year behind me in your mods and you can keep trying them out at Hershey . Wait until you drive my car next year (I won't spoil the surprise).
Glad that you are happy with your upgrades,
Jay
I agree. I have the RSBarn complete exhaust, headers to tailpipe, stage II
WooHoo!
jay,
if your getting cams and head work.... gahhhh its so hard to keep up! lol
actually when my head ate itself last year i ended up getting the head machined a little and getting a 4 way valve job.... so does this mean im in the lead as of right now? haha
Nope
My head work was done at 56k after a catastrophic belt failure (Lemons into lemonade, I discovered forums shortly after).
More goodies up my sleeve...let's say something really trippy
Jay
Damn that exhasut system sounds good!! I have already started saving for the full RS Barn exhaust system
ya i saved for a looonnnnnggg time. haha i just had to tell mom that it only changes the sound.... and not performance. dad just laughed and played along.

Jay,
What type of head work did you have done? RS Barn Stage 1, 2, or 3? And did you get the RS Barn cams as well?
Sadly, it was before RS Barn.
Not sure exactly what they call it when they refresh the head, but it was milled, etc. I know compression was very strong. (sorry I can't be more exact).
No cams yet, waiting for a more streetable version. I like my performance smoooooth.

Yea, my car is almost like an on/off switch. 4K RPM is when it comes to life. Almost feels like a Honda VTEC switching over to the big cam.

Hey Fox - what mods do you have which netted 245 whp - that's friggin stout. I've got my car with RSBarn being converted into a full blown racer - curious if you did something I'm missing.
Thanks,
Ben
Ben,
Took 3+ years to get here. I'm still running a cat. We are going to try a few more things (hoping to get over 250RWHP-streetable). Pete @ RS Barn is largly responsible for where my car is as it sits today. But i have all the bolt-on modifications including lightweight pulleys & a 12.5lbs billet steel flywheel. RS Barn's latest Cams & lots of head work. My head was built to spec by Powerhaus prior to RS Barn offering headwork. Custom Map (Dyno tuned by RS Barn).
Pete knows all the details on my build.

Yes, 245 rwhp is outstanding - it equates to easily 280 hp at the flywheel. I remember back in the 968.net days the belief held by many was that it was simply impossible to increase the horsepower of these engines. Nice to see we've come a long way.
As far as the peaky nature of your engine - this may sound radical, but have you thought about adding a nitrous injection system which squirts some nitrous just to cover the flat spot in your power band? In other words, only when you give it full throttle, and just until the engine hits about 4000 rpm? The nitrous wouldn't be used to increase the peak horsepower of your engine, and thus shouldn't appreciably reduce its longevity; it would just replace some of the low end torque you've lost due to your other mods. Given the improved engine acceleration thanks to your lighweight flywheel, the nitrous would only be needed for an instant under full throttle, and wouldn't be used at all either above 4000 rpm, or during normal driving, so the bottle should last quite awhile. Just a thought...
I havn't lost any low-end (i'm making more power everywhere compared to a stock motor). Car peaks at 238.3lb-ft @ 4200rpm @ the wheels. But there is a massive increase in power above 4K RPM.
i have considered a nitrous system. something small, maybe a 50HP shot. But there are other things i still want to play with in hopes that i can get over 250RWHP.
So you mean you've gained everywhere across the power band, but just have gained more above 4000 rpm? I misunderstood; it sounded like you had sacrificed a lot of low end at the expense of the high end.
As far as the nitrous, I know it's considered a radical, drag-racing-specific mod, but I've also heard people using it to overcome turbo lag after installing a large aftermarket turbo. And I read an article years ago in the very conservative BMW Roundel magazine about a guy who installed it on his 3-Series, because he concluded it was the most cost-effective way to increase horsepower.
Anyway, it sounds like you've made great gains; keep us posted as to your progress.
