i think that is the reference sensor - the hall sensor can be had for quite a bit less

it goes back at the flywheel - pretty sure we have one, though i've never seen it - pelican says we do

The reference sender is mounted at the back of block above the flywheel.
This tells the ECU where the crank is.

Yes we do. I replaced mine when I banged and dinged the silver coloured cover while installing the new DMF. My car runs much smoother after replacing the old one. By the way, the 924 and 944 has two of these, but the 968 has only one.
The BMW sensor is cheaper but the cable is much longer, and at the time I thought that the extra cable length brought it to close to the exhaust manifold. If this is an issue I don't know, but I want to keep my electronics as far away from that heat source as possible.

I think I paid $59 for the BMW reference sensor last year. Sure it's longer, mine is looped around the oil filler tube to take up the slack.
