The engine compartment of my 37K mile cab is content and not real comfortable with change, but I have this little crate in my garage that's screaming for a home. Anyone want weigh-in on the blasphemous thoughts running through my mind?
What is it?
Looks like a 20B.

Yep.....bought for a future project, but I have too many projects. Every once in a while I find myself staring alternately at the 20B and the 3-litre, wonderning how nice it would be to have 400-500 hp sitting low and behind the front wheel centerline. I think Felix Wankel would approve....but I'm not so sure about Ferry Porsche!
Awesome little engine.

love the wankel - relatively unlimited power - tough when they go south, as there isn't really anything you can do but rebuild the whole thing, but what a design
Ah...I had 2 Rx-7s and loved them both.
Blasphemy aside...in many ways the 1988 Rx-7 convertible was better (thought out) than the 968.

Go sit in the corner... Right now mister!
I owned and raced three different second gen RX7 cars - awesome machines - really hard to blow up the motors....but I did. They never broke from wear - just bad shifing.
funny - i was just commenting on that the other day when i saw a really clean white one - nice cars - really put a dent in the 944 market at the time

Side by side, I'd pick the Porsche every time. But the same understated design I love about the 968....simple, clean, form-following- function....makes the rotary seem like a natural transplant. Ultimately, however, prudence will prevail. Maybe I'll find a 914 rolling chassis....those poor little cars never got any respect!
A 3 rotor 914 would be an awesome little weapon.
If you decide to sell it, let me know.
I have friend who builds seroius RX-7's in south Florida.
He used to work fir Cam @ Petit.
even a wound up 2 rotor is a nice powerplant - i've seen 300hp in street trim - heck, the stock series 5 with 202 at 2600lbs was a nice car - it outran the S2 cab, had a tonneau cover, dual exhaust, and i believe a glass rear window - all at less than half the price

I expected to get slammed when I started this thread. It's refreshing to find the rotary engine held in such high regard amongst this group.....but I suppose I shouldn't be suprised.....afterall, we drive 968s!
lol - hey, when it works, it works
would i? could i? should i? - that's a whole different animal
interesting idea though
I worked at an RX7 shop for a year or two about 10 years ago with a long time friend.
They built some sick cars.
They built a few 3 rotor 3rd gens.
They also did a 3 rotor install in an Opel GT and a few Miatas.
Big thing is apex seals.
How much added low-end torque do you gain by adding the third rotor? I love the wankel's free-revving nature, but there's a pretty severe price to be paid in low end torque, at least with the two-rotors. I bet the three-rotor sounds pretty darn nice, too.
I don't know what made me think of this, but a cool home for this engine would be in an early 90's Toyota MR2. Great mid-engine chassis, and the N/A's can not only be had very cheap (I actually saw one on Autotrader a few months ago without an engine), plus they made a lot more N/A hardtops (the turbos were mostly T-tops), which makes for a much stiffer chassis. Seems like this would be a killer track car, for a reasonable price.
Just out of curiosity (as a project as described above isn't in the cards for me right now), how much is an engine like the one you have worth? Seems like a lot of custom machining must be involved in creating a 3-rotor wankel.
3 rotors came stock in a few jap spec cars. I think it was a Cosmo.
Hense the 20b designation.
Responds real well to boost.
Mazda ran a 4 rotor car at Le Mans in the early 90's.

Is there a quotient for how many rotors are the approximate equivalent of "X" amount of cylinders? For example a 3 rotor Wankel motor may be comparable to having 8 cylinders. Just curious.

Funny that you should mention this as a friend of mine is working on such a setup as we speak. Biggest issue so far is to score a strong enough tranny at a decent price.
