I have the very common problem that my hall sender's plastic cover has crumbled under the heat it must endure due to its unfortunate location. I remember a thread awhile back in which somebody (I think it was xrad) recommended a replacement cover. I did a search, but couldn't find the thread. Does anybody know of a replacement cover for the sender? If so, could you please provide the name of the company that sells it, along with the part number or numbers? Thanks.
probably better off just replacing the sender - it's pretty easy, and about the same amount of work
alternatively, you could use shrink tubing
Well, now that I have your heat shield, I figure the sender probably will have a long life, so I don't think it's worth replacing it, especially since my car is running very smoothly, with none of the symptoms indicating any problems with the sender. I hear you that it's a moderate amount of work to get to this thing, though. I can't explain this, but it's as though the wire leading to the sender is several inchers shorter than when the cover disintegrated. I other words, it used to lie happily in its holder behind the distributor, but when the cover fell apart, I wrapped it in electrical tape and tied a tie wrap around it (my klugey, "temporay" solution of about two years ago), and now it's way back behind its holder, buried behind the heater control valve tubing, and whatever else is back there. Very weird. Maybe I managed to kink the wire on something, but it's stuck back there pretty tight. Hopefully when I dig back there to fish the sender out to install the cover, it will make sense.
mine finally disintegrated almost a year AFTER i installed the heat shield - the damage was already done long before, and just waiting to completely fall apart
i'm not sure how you will install a cover over the connector, without removing the wires from it, unless you use one that starts large and then shrinks - the oem ones go onto the harness first, slid down the harness out of the way, then the pins get installed into the connector, and the cover slipped over the connector after that
to change the sender only involves removal of the valve cover - then you have access to the 2 screws holding the sender in place - took me 15 minutes in all
I have a good crack free hall sender if you want it.
$70 shipped.
good to hear those sessions are working and you are crack free - we were all concerned
I'm having an intermittent problem there, as well. Do you have a photo of this heat shield that I might copy the idea, after I replace the Hall Sender?
lol - patent pending - it's a lot more than just a piece of metal too
but you can buy one easily enough at rs barn
Yes, I highly recommend buying it from RS Barn. Remembering the amount of work Flash went through to get it right, I would encourage you to just go ahead and buy it. Plus, you're supporting the folks who keep the great mods for our 968s coming. I can attest to how well it works - very noticeable drop in underhood temperature.
