When my engine goes back in it will have the RS Barn 18# FW (see picture...it's beautiful). On another thread it has been mentioned that to run this FW you also need to use an S2 harmonic balancer pulley. I would like to get some real world feed back before I go out and spend 3 or 4 hundred $ on a pulley. Can those of you that run this 18# FW with and without the S2 pulley please post comments. Thanks!
For the most part, S2 harmonic balancer is only recomended for the 12lbs. Fadanza flywheel.
the Fidanza flywheel is 13.5LBS if i'm not mistaken, i remember it being heavier then mine which is why i sprung for the Powerhaus flywheel (even though its 4 times the price, i wanted the lightest flywheel possible). I run a 12.5LBS Powerhaus Flywheel, no S2 Balancer, no problems.
i will weigh them again, but my first fidanza was 12.5lbs
"problems" i have heard of are subjective - all single mass flywheels will exhibit transaxle rattle - it will vary in degree, depending on the weight of the flywheel, the oil in the transaxle, the balance of the engine, and the temperature of the transaxle
the S2 dampener i installed was an attempt to reduce the rattle - i think it did, but not by much - i only retained it because the SC produces so much drag, that when you let off the throttle suddenly the revs drop too fast and it stalls
the balancer is not needed for normally aspirated engines - it may still help though - you can always add it later
make sure you balance your flywheel and pressure plate prior to installation - this is key to reducing rattle and ensuring smooth operation - when having it balanced, make sure they do NOT remove the center bearing housing - it is bonded in there, and this is necessary
i dont get much rattle with my flywheel. But temp. is a huge factor. When the transaxle gets really hot, there is a lot of rattle...when cold/warm...virtually none.
used to be, i got used to it. People always think there is something wrong with the car....which gets annoying.
Mines the same, fine when cold, loud when hot. I just put the clutch in at 2500 when coming to a stop so nobody stares at the rattling Porsche.
I have the Fidanza flywheel and a lightened crank. The car is turbocharged. I never hear rattle as long as the drive line is delivering torque as in steady state driving above 30 mph or under accel/decel at any speed/any gear. Putzing through the neighborhood with my foot on/off the gas at low speed it sounds like rocks in a coffee can. Move the shifter to neutral and the noise disappears. These symptoms indicate to me that the rattle is occurring due to the low drive line inertia causing the drive line to oscillate slightly under low load at low rpm. This results in rapid reversal of torque into the gear box which causes the gear teeth to rattle as the drive shaft changes rotational speed. Since the load is very low, the behavior is not damaging to gear box. For me personally, it is irritating so I keep the car out of the problem zone or I cycle through neutral to 2nd and back when in the paddock, neighborhoods, I-4 traffic jams, school zones, etc. I avoid I-4 and in Fl we don't do much downhill so that is not an issue for me .
Good info. I appreciate the comments. Pete was very open about the rattling, and I accepted that when I ordered the light FW. Has anybody besides Flash tried a light FW with and without the S2 pulley?
Reviving an early post(#4) from this thread. Do you think it's ok to install a used harmonic balancer with the SC? I doubt they ever go out of balance from age unless they have been smacked.
it's not going out of balance that would concern me - it's the rubber being old and shearing under the increased load - remember that the S2 only makes about 200ft/lbs - the SC kit makes nearly 300
this one will be a judgement call, based on your confidence in the condition of the rubber
Yea, the only way to get a used one is sight unseen, eBay etc. so probably not worth the exercise. What's that tag line of yours again
lol - if only that tag line did not come to me the hard way
