Since I have owned my car, the brake squeel has ALWAYS annoyed me. The gentleman I bought it from had said that he had put track pads on, but I am not sure as to what kind or brand. A couple of things I have noticed.

1) After washing, the noise goes away for a bit but comes back soon after.
2) During spirited driving, I notice a tendency to hear what seems like a noise from the right front during heavy braking. I cannot put my finger on the noise, but it is noticeable. It does seem that when the noise appears, the car brakes differently and feels like there is slightly less stopping power.

My rotors look fine, with no signs of wear. I have taken the car in to the local dealership and of course they cannot seems to find the source of the noise. I am incline to think that they didn't actually experience the same symtpons I have. As well, they didn't rid the squeeling noise.

Any input would be great as to eliminating the squeel and some pad recommendations. Thx.

Tough to say what it could be, but many people tend to reuse the anti squeel pads (or even not use them at all). They should be replaced every time you replace the pads.

there are a couple of things that could cause squeal:

it is very common when the rotors are not surfaced when new pads are installed

hard or metallic pads also tend to make noise

failure to install the plates behind the pads can cause them to squeal

Some pads are just noisy, particularly many track pads. I do not care for the sound so I use a quiet pad. I like PBR Metal Masters for street use. Ceramic pads might dust less but they are sometimes noisy, sometimes quiet. I'm sure they create some dust, the pad material goes somewhere but maybe it just does not stick to the wheels. Brake dust does not bother me a bit so I use Metal Masters, generally. They are not super dusty but there will be some dust.

Some pads are very hard on the rotors (OEM compound seems to be one example.) That is also not my taste for street use.

i ran metal masters for decades, on pretty much every car i had - never had a problem with them making noise - decent pad, especially given the price - extremely low dust - however, they always had the typical cold stop issue, and i did have one car that hated them (E30) - they just never would bed in right on that car, and tore up the rotors - i've seen that on a couple of 968s too, though not all of them - i know some brands of rotors are softer than others, so it could just be that

I get a lot of squeal from my Hawk blues on my race car. I had to grind the metal on each end of the metal backing down to get them to fit in the M030 calipers and I wonder if that is causing the squeal. Tight fit...pads too wide. Had to take off 1-2mm off each pad.

My post reads confusing - it is that each pad is too long that each end contacts the caliper and had to grind off the ends to make them fit into the caliper...

Thanks for the replies. I'll have to pull the pads to see what I have. I definitely would like something a little more quiet without sacrifing the existing stopping power. I would probably benefit from upgrading my brake lines while I am it, no?
