So, last weekend I sold my 951. I'm happy and sad.
I did get very close to my asking price, this was a great thing.
After messing with the waterpumpers for 8 years I'm just burnt out.
These cars have been very good to me as well as all the fine folks I've met over the years. I'm still not going anywhere and will still be showing up to meets, gatherings and celebrations. (Its in he blood).

But it may be time to change my name to BimmerDude :-)
I had a number of BMW's prior to getting into porsches, and the bug for another E24 had been biting me for the last few months. I had 4 of them :-).

After searching for the last 2 months I picked up an '89 635. They stopped production of the 635 April 3, 1989. Mine was built in march of '89. I still have not found out which day.

The car I got is a 3 owner car with owner number 2 owning it from '91 till '07. It was a summer car for the Hamptons. Always garaged. Came with records going back to 1990. The PO bought it as a daily driver and put $18k into it over the last 2 1/2 years. I feel like I stole the car from him.

I really wanted an '89, and it had to be black. I found a Black over Silver Gray car. Leather everywhere including the headliner. Front and rear AC.
A manual would have been nice. But as some of you know "thee car" can be hard to find. This one is sadley an automatic. I have already started gathering the needed parts for a 5 speed swap.

It has some Alpina reps on it that are brand new. Unfortunatley they are not aggresive enough for my tastes. They will work for the time being till I source the right set of wheels. Only other plans are to lower it.
Here is the only pic I have right now. I'll put up a few pics over the weekend. I'm really stoked about finding this car. Should hold me over till I can get into a (dare I say it) tail dragger.

I can appreciate where you're coming from - BMWs are great cars. We have three in our family - an '07 328i, an '03 X5, and an '04 325i for my daughter (great first car for a kid - very safe, decent reliability, easy to work on, and a fantastic web forum presence). The 635 looks great. Enjoy!
I really like the 6ers, very sweet. At the time 4 years ago I was searching for next cars, I looked at the 850s at the same time as examining options in the P-Car family. The 850 styling is excellent, but I happily ended up with the 968.

The 6 series is a classy car, and it sounds like you got a very good example.

Is a tail dragger is a 911? I have owned a couple an loved them all, but they are a bitch to work on.
Nice... Before my Pcars, I was looking for one, but only found very poor examples and gave up. The process rekindled the pcar need and I ended up with my 2 cars. The 635's are the only BM's that I like. I might still go down that path again. Ironically, they are of the same era as the 944S2's and 968's. I liking these cars must have something to do with the impact these cars made on me when I started working and had dreams of owning these cool machines. Enjoy...
Pat,

We'll still love you!

Ain't nothing wrong with a 6! I love 'em!!! Whenever I see one, all I can think of is "Hawk!"

I hearby nominate a change to your forum name... From "PorscheDude" to "Hawk" or "SpensersAlterEgo!"

Btw- I have a secret longing for an 850 and if it weren't my wife's turn for a new car, I'd be looking to get into an E46 wagon as my daily.
In 1986 my brother was working for a BMW dealer in Boston. For his wedding we "borrowed" a 635CSi and an M6 right off the lot to drive the wedding party. These cars were the most beautiful and luxurious cars I'd ever seen and to my eye they were just rolling sculpture.

Best of luck with your new ride, and please don't be a stranger.

The line up at Hershey could look very weird over the nxt few years

I've always loved the classic look of the 635...congrats! Can't wait to see it in person. As for showing up at 968 events, I'm always willing to let you drive my Coupe!

- Darryl
One of bmw's best. There aré a few of them running around town where i live and they look great. Nice find.
Looks like it's in great shape ! I have always liked that model. You better show up at some events so I can go for a cruise ! Good Luck with it !
That 6 is STUNNING! It amazes me how you consistently find such good examples of older cars.

I saw your ad for the 951 on craigslist. Not surprised you got close to your asking price. That 51 was nice.

Guess what? I'm also getting a Bimmer.I've been toying with the idea for months and I'm now ready to jump on the right E46. So you will see me popping up on the fanatics page but much like you, despite having a bimmer, this place will always be home.

I knew you guys would understand, thanks for the positive feedback.

I first saw an E24 back in 1981 when I moved to Ft. Lauderdale as an 10 year old kid who loved cars.
Much like Dino seeing the 968 back in '92, I knew I would one day have one.
These cars have been a life long love affair for me.
I have alway wanted an E31 myself, but find them to be a little to refined and cushy. Plus they are plaqued with electrical issues.

After driving the 951 more this year than ever, I decided I hated turbo lag. Just not for me.
The strange thing is, when I bought my 968, this (951) was what I had envisioned in my head.
I love everyhing about it oher than no low end torque. Perhaps I should have just swapped in a 968 engine and 6 speed.
I still miss the 968, and think of it often.

I won't be going anywhere anytime soon. Who knows, the right 968 might just fall into my lap on of these days. Much like my first 944 did.

I'll be sure not to park near any 968's at any meets.......:-)

David, if you need any help finding the E46 give me a ring.

Darryl, I'll be down soon.

Jay, Jim and Rico, I'm sure I'll see you guys in the near future. Does Pete have plans for a meet in the fall at the barn?
Sorry I missed you guys last week, I had planned on going but you know how life can be.
not so sure about bimmerdude, but definitely bummerdude - lol

seriously, i have always loved that car, however underpowered and heavy - one of the nicest designs they ever did
Lol. Bummerdude that just might work. Like how I missed forced induction by a year. That was a bummer dude!

Yea, and again, I'm a hundred horsepower short. Bummer dude.....

Build me a supercharger for it. I know you have lots of vigor left:-)

Always love the 635, Wasn't that car featured on that '80's sitcom "Moonlighting" with Bruce Willis
My all time favorite BMW since a friend of mine had one in the late 80's, I keep looking in the classifieds but with 2 old P cars and an old BMW E30 coupe to play with can not really find an excuse (or room) for another old car.. Looks like you managed to get a pristine example as well, congrats!
The 6 series is nice. But to be honest, I would never ever exchange it with a 968 (or 951).
Yea, felt that way at one point. Then again, I felt that way before I got into the Porsches.
I'm pleased because I got a cool car in good shape and an extra $6k in the bank.
I wish you an excellent time with your 6er and hope that you'll come back to Porsche soon.
Pat,

Lovin' the 635. As you know my dailies have been Bimmers for years. I've done the E30 M3 thing and an E34 M5 (love to have it back...), but the 635 and/or the M6 are likely the best looking cars ever to come out of BMW. Good luck with it.

I'm thinking of going taildragger too... I've attached a pic of the car I am looking at.
