Read up and make your best guess. I should get my baby back at the end of the week, then we can name a winner. What do you win?
Self-esteem.
I am not sure what roller would be associated with the alternator so I am not quite getting the picture, but I bet they charge you $650.00 for their time and the few cheap parts.
I'll bet double that...$1,300

Depends on where u took it to a Porsche dealer $1000.00 to a Porsche repair shop $500.00
Impossible to guess without a complete list of all the imaginary parts they intend to (pretend to) replace.
I will guess $1,250 real dollars.
To my best understanding, the roller in question basically no longer exists, stripping the belt... so anything connected to that belt isn't working properly.... pretty sure the alternator is on that belt, isn't it?
For clarification:
Porsche mechanic, not a dealership.
List of parts said to be replaced: All rollers and intermediate belt.
Mind you, this is not my usual mechanic. This shop is close and convenient for a tow... usually only take it in for oil changes to this guy. My preferred mechanic is about an hour away - but I am beginning to think (now almost three weeks later) that I should have bitten the bullet and had it towed there. You know what they say about hindsight.
To add to the scenario: Just talked to the mechanic. He's been waiting on a salvage yard to get a part that holds the belt on that has been discontinued by Porsche.... Thanks, guy, for letting me know... Maybe I could have helped in the search. Don't think he's on the Forums.
Anyways... anyone know what "part" he might be referring to?
We need to know if he is talking about the Balance Shaft belt or the Alternator/A/C belt.. Also the part number that he is searching on would really help.
These are the only rollers I can think of. They are the balance/ timing rollers. Accessories are just pulley to pulley with a turnbuckle for adjustment.
OK, so the car came home today. Came home with an issue that it didn't have when I dropped it off, but I'll get to that. Among other things:
Aux. Shaft Roller ~$75
Bal. Shaft Tens. ~$65
Bal. Shaft Belt ~$120
Labor $290

Total bill with tax $670
Turns out the battery wasn't related to the balance shaft roller giving out. Gee... The battery stopped holding a charge. So everything is hunky-dory, right?
Three weeks of dust and dirt accumulated sitting at the garage. Went to use my washer/wipers... nothing. Got home, checked the fuse - burnt. Put a brand new one in, nothing. Checked the new one - burnt. BURNT?!? So, is there something haywire that could have happened when they changed out the battery that could cause this???
