Regarding the comment of mounting the radar unit and the GPS with all the cords being a mess. Back in the late 70's when the escort was first introduced there was a company ON NYC that would mount an Escort in the front of the car somewhere near the bumper and another one in the rear. On the dash was some sort of a light and a speaker. You never actually needed to see the radar unit, because when it went off your first reaction was to step on the brake to slow down and then to look at the unit. with this set up there were no wires as everything was permanently wired. After a while you did not have to look at the light.
What I did because I could not afford the set up as descried above, was to put a wire through the dash and only have a short wire sticking out. It was a lot neater this way. As it was hot all the time as I soldier the other end into the cigarette lighter it was very neat.
And the unit was put away at night so nothing was there to attract the thieves.
blendmount makes mirror mounts for most detectors. they also make a power cable that plugs into mirrors that have power features (garage door openers, lights, etc) this alleviates the ugly power cord issues, as well as mounts it so that it does not rely on suction cups on the windshield
Quote:Just read an article on which cars get the most speeding tickets and Porsche is not on the top 10 list. Merceds Benz leads the list. I would have thought Porsche would make the list. Does this mean we all have radar detectors or are just whimps when driving? One other note I also see that Escort has developed a combination radar and GPS unit. It looks pretty cool and certainly would solve the dangle of cords around the dash. It will show where the radar unit is on your map. However at $650 it's a little pricey if you already have one of each (moi). But if you buy a good radar $300-$400 and a GPS $200 it would be at the right price. The only trouble is that leaving a GPS or radar on you dash invites theft.
I just called Escort and they told me that they no longer sell the combo unit of a Radar Detector with a GPS as most people have a cell phone that has GPS built into their phone. Therefore Escort discontinued that unit.
Dare we dream of the day when this may be reality ?

Even Ca is introducing a measure to have a no speed limit ( at all ) on one lane of HWY 5 for quite a few long stretches throughout most of the state, and also various stretches of HWY 99 . I for one wouldn't mind a 2 hour drive to L.A. , but once you get there it then takes you another 2 hours to get from L.A. to L.A., lol .
My only reservation is that in general, U.S. drivers are not at all disciplined and either able or willing to follow the protocol of the road observed in Germany or other countries where triple digit speeds are the norm . And, again, in general not nearly as capable either .. waaaay too many novices at the wheel who think they're all race drivers and that just begs for problems . Furthemore, the condition of our highways are not ideal for high speeds, so they're going to have to pave those lanes and maintain them in top condition frequently. That's expensive but if they charge a high fee for use of those lanes, they may recover some of the costs.
Otherwise, could be fun.
The only reason unlimited speed limit can work in Europe is because the everybody knows the requirement to move to the right lane. That is mandatory, because the high speed cars must have the left lane. Possibly in much of the US, and certainly in California, drivers think all lanes are a passing lane, even though the law says passing is on the left and slower drivers must move to the right. Even I remember driving on the Autobahn and seeing flashing headlights a mile behind me, and getting ready to move to the right lane asap. Too many Californian's have this funny, kinda cool, kinda slick, kinda "I'm important" attitude, and believe some quick high speed pass on the right makes them a cool driver (or even some people do the ramping move). The only way it can work is if drivers become constantly aware of everything around them, rather than dumbly staring straight ahead in a daydream, which is most drivers.
I watch drivers stay in the left lane at the speed limit all the time. Flashing them does nothing. I’ve always wished for a phaser.
Hellfire Missile, or a rack of Sidewinders should get their attention
The James Bond DB would come in handy
but a phaser makes them disappear. Probably no carbon footprint either. So it would definitely be legal in aura land.
But a Phaser is just not dramatic enough, a huge fireball is much better, a bit more Stallone
Rumor has it that the next Tesla models will come with optional phasers...and that they're working on developing photon torpedoes for the higher end models...
Sorry to geek out here, but I think what we want is photon torpedoes, I think phasers only work on the individuals inside the car. What we want to do is turn the entire vehicle (and all contents) into vapor...
:ninja:
Jay
who cares what it is as long as its a big fireball, and crap raining down from the sky for about 5 mins

Teslas are torpedoes as it is..all you need is to get close to a targeted car, cause a fender and BOOM ! Of course you'll blow up yourself in that process , but hey, you'll die a martyr for the e-car , save the planet cause ;-) :-)
roflmao - b.s. - stop listening to the right wing media hype. you are more likely to get hit by lightening while being "serviced" by a hottie than have a tesla blow up. when it comes to car fires, they are 11 times safer than a gasoline powered car in a collision. i always thought it was insane to run around with 20 gallons of a volatile chemical like gasoline. in a collision you are just waiting to get napalmmed. as somebody who was in a crash that resulted in a gasoline fire, from which i narrowly escaped, i can tell you that is one of the scariest things to deal with afterward. it is a constant concern. i feel much safer in an electric car, because i know the statistics. fact versus fantasy (or nightmare).
as for cars that get the most speeding tickets, it's almost always the car that stands out from the crowd. cops look for "relative speed" as primary cause. the simplest way to avoid them, is to not be the car going the fastest. also, avoid lane changing, and stay out of the left lane as much as possible. not terribly difficult. i frequently travel well above the speed limit, but following those guidelines has kept me clear of tickets for a long time.
I’m a right lane man myself.
i try to stay in the center lane. it avoids the ons and offs of merging traffic, and worrying about passing or being passed by nuts in the fast lane. basically i am lazy, and want to get from point a to point b with as little effort and/or fuss as possible, and then get the heck out of the car. it's truly nutty how much my attitude toward driving has changed over the years. i used to hop in the car just to go for a drive. now, i try to avoid driving at all.
being here in ireland has likely contributed to that, as i need to drive a lot less, and since you really can't own a nice car here, it makes the experience entirely different. i am getting pretty close to being able to stop driving altogether, and just have a driver take me around when i need to go somewhere. that would avoid tickets completely. it sure would save a lot of money too. no car costs. no fuel costs. no registration. no insurance. based on an average car payment and all that, i could rent a limo 4 times a month for the same cost, or take a cab 10 times a month. i barely need to go out that much.
as for speeding, because the traffic speeds are so much lower here, and the highways are generally 2 lanes each way, when i went back to LA a couple of weeks ago, it shocked me that it seemed like everybody was flying around at breakneck speeds. i used to be right in there with them, and didn't think a thing of it. now i found that i had to focus to keep up.
it's all relative i suppose.

To be clear , I NEVER listen to any right wing media , and even if I hear anything related in passing, I give it zero credibility , but what you're saying about Teslas and the chances as compared to other hazards, like fuel cars or lightning ,lol , is pure nonsense . Whatever stats you pull up are based on biased reports which are fueled ( no pun ) and arguably funded by the massive Tesla lobby .
I do completely agree with the second part of your post though .. re cars who typically get the speeding tickets .
