If anyone is near their car with a tape measure and wouldn't mind measuring the length and width of the outside edges of the ashtray (front to back and side to side) I'd appreciate it. I am thinking 4 inches front to back and 6 side to side, but I never measured it. I have a line on a piece of leather but want to ask for the right size.

Thanks

It is trapezoidal in shape so:

front (towards shift knob) is 5 11/16" wide while the back (towards rear seats) is 5 1/4" wide

front to back is 3 1/2"

All measurements are +/- lil' bit due to chamfer on plastic.

Edit- the measurements above are for the black plastic cover on the ashtray - not the ashtray itself.
remember that it will take more material if you want to do the inside
OOOOOH! A leather ashtray...now that's something I bet Jeff Coe doesn't even have on "Minty"! You go Joe!

I lined mine with leather a year ago, do I win?

I have a template if any wants it. I could photographnad post it but you would then have to scale it up to real life and print it. The ashtray is not even a good trapezoid as the angles are different on one side so you can't just create a mirror image.
lol - funny the small things we get excited about i am avoiding doing anything leather in the cab - being a cab, it just gets too much sun, and i don't like having to constantly treat leather - so, i lined mine with carpet
When you guys line your ash trays your goal is to turn them into cellphone holders correct?

That being the case, don't you have to trim away some of the plastic to make the opening big enough. Has anyone documented the steps?
while the iphone fits perfectly in that spot, it wasn't my main focus, since i don't need the phone visible, and the cable for the charger/ipod is in the console

you really do have to remove the material for any of the new smart phones - it won't slip in under the lid, and certainly not without damaging the phone

the steps are pretty simple

pry off bottom metal section

remove cigarette tongue

dremel out lower area of lid

line metal base

reattach lid to base
Thanks Bob
Yes, exactly. Since I did not see a patent anywhere I blatantly stole, err, borrowed the idea from Dave and Bob. I rarely leave the car uncovered in the sun and I like leather so I figured what the hey. And this is a project that I can handle - no moving parts, nothing pressurized so I figure both me and the car are safe...

We made a slight mod to the project. Rather than line the base of the ashtray we just used the plastic top and put a piece of upholstery foam where the ashtray was and topped it with a cover (using carpet for the moment but will switch to leather). Its like a little pillow. Fits the iphone 4 perfectly. I have a "commuter" bumper on my so I had to sand out the inside edges just a hair. Now I am plotting to make a pair of legs so that I can prop it a bit and use the landscape maps feature - who needs GPS units any longer???

I'll get a couple of pictures this evening.

And Jim - thanks for the measurements.
Forgot to mention the "while your in there". I changed out the light bulb with an amber LED, to match the ones in my footwells, and cut a tiny hole in the leather to mate with the hole in the ashtray. At night the storage pocket is now lit with an amber hue, put on some Barry White and the ladies are putty <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/biggrin.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Are your clips still there? Looks like there missing.
Could someone post a pic with the clips? I think mine are missing too.

Bill
There more like prongs. Note the slit opening on the consoles base. The prongs fasten into the left and right side slits.
Nope. Clips or prongs or whatever you call them were sacrificed during separation from the tray. I used Gorilla tape to secure the carpet to the underside of the tray lid. Provides enough material for a "friction" fit. It stays put.

Without the tape it did float around in there a bit.

A couple of additional pics with the iphone.

Here's a few shots from my install plus my paper template. I too the templave sho straight down so it should scale up ok. If anything it will give you a starting point to a beta template. I hollowed out the light bulb socket and put a 1/4 watt resistor in there for the LED, about 1K or so I think; I always tinker with the values until I get the brightness I desire.
Just did mine last week.  I still need to line it, but for now I sprayed it with some Flat Black spraypaint and it looks fine.
