Although this may sound like a stupid question, I just ran across a 87 944 with a 968 engine in it. How does one value the engine besides supply and demand? I might had this was alleged as I was unable to inquire do to the lot being closed.
Supply = 1 car
Demand = suitable Porsche nut, not many!
Not much of a Market price on a product like this. The seller will have a har time regaining a fraction of the cost, so if you want the car someone was stupid enough to do expensive work for you.
A 944 will be significantly lighter than a 968 so should be a great car! I happen to have a simmilar project.

There is no value other than supply and demand. Sellers will often say "I have to get X for this because I've put that much into it," but the value of something is not set by how much it cost to make, but rather only by how much someone is willing to pay. I walk away from sellers like that. Conversely, a painting by the masters probably didn't cost much in the way of materials (a board and some paint), but they go for millions now - again, supply and demand.

So a $15,000 car that cost someone an additional $20,000 to modify - or maintain properly - may still only be worth its base value. By the way, I use "hacked" in the positive sense of modifying something ingeniously, as opposed to the derogatory term for something which has been cut apart or done poorly.[/color][/size]

[size="2"][color="#1C2837"]You make your money (or limit your loss) when you buy, not when you sell - so for something like this, consider that when you wish to sell it, the potential market will be scant and you'll be looking for that needle in the haystack person that will ascribe value to what's been done to the car.[/color][/size]
I need to go back when the lot is open, but this car was for sale for a $1000. Yea yea, I know. This is what prompted the original question. Any value for parts?
Over here a 968 engine is 3 - 4000 USD. A 944 S 2 gearbox is perhaps 1000 USD and 968 gearboxes 2000 - 2500 USD.
If you value the horsepower it is good buy compared to tuning something you buy.

Parting something out is a royal PITA, especially once all the in-demand parts are gone. Once the shell is compromised (by selling the hatch, for instance) storage and security become the issue.

When I buy used engines I take them apart at shop. Most have been good. We alway put in all new bearings, seals, belts ect. I always install a fresh head too. So a used engine can be 2-4K purchase and 2-4k to refurbish
So does a 968 engine work in a 944 or was that crock?
