Just looked at a local 92 coupe with tip tranny. It has 137,000 miles dark blue with tan interior. 17" rims but standard options. Body is good, interior is good except ripped drivers seat. Updated cold ac. Drove it and it ran and shifted well but seemed extremely under powered. The guy wants $5500. Records? Sort of. What do you guys think?

A daily driver, then sell it later on.
I don't know about a tip, but I am sure that you know the typical things to look for - regular oil changes, timing belt, seals, trans fluid change, how much stuff is leaking and from where, and on and on. $5,500 sounds good - unless lot's needs to be done. How does it look from underneath? When was the t-belt last changed? Have the vario-cam pads ever been done?
Definitely do a compression test. How's the oil pressure at idle? Does it smoke? Could be a very good deal if there is nothing fundamentally wrong with the engine, and the lack of power has an easy fix.
use the PPI form in the Buyer's Guide area and go through the list
at 5500 there should be a lot of room for profit whether you sell it or part it, but as a daily driver it may not be up to the task - you won't know though until you do things like a leak down/compression test to see how strong it is - a tip can be very misleading on how strong it feels - it will always feel soft out of the hole compared to the manual
So long as you remember that there are no cheap Porsches, your head will be in the right place going in.
Ok, he's down to $5000. I spoke with his mechanic who did the work. Red flag!!!! He (Local mechanic) did a valve job caused from a broken timing and balance belt. Claims he replaced all valves. Did not replace Variocam shoes cause they were fine. I don't believe he knew what I was asking. Did not replace waterpump cause it cost too much. Zims is very reasonable. Rack is leaking bad from the boots. Just rebuilt mine. Power steering hoses were replaced with Napa specials and hose clamps. Tranny is leaking not sure where. The car is slow but runs smooth surprisingly. I really think the cam timing is off or the valve job was not done correctly. All things considered I'm still interested. Talk me out of it.
The first 968 I looked at seemed to be in fairly good shape initially. I noticed a few cosmetic problems and the top only worked manually. The PPI however revealed that it needed about $10K worth of work to make it right. When I added that to the purchase price, I realized I could just get one in really good shape for the same, or less. I looked for a couple more months and found a beauty with 30K less mileage that wound up costing a couple of grand less that I would have spent on the first one. I'm VERY happy I waited.

Sounds like more of a project car/potential track car than something that could easily be turned into a daily driver.
Two years before I purchased my car, last november, I took the owner with me to look at a nice red cab. Fortunately my friend pointed out a couple of inconsistencies ( outright lies ) in the owners response to me. He didn't bring service records either. Now understand, I was hot to buy a Porsche. Downright salivating. My friend suggested not to. Since I had brought him along for his expertise and am sometimes mature, I listened. I bought my friends 968,current, two years later. Patience is a virtue. Rare is the time that the one time only bargain perfect deal slips away!

man, that description is not instilling confidence... all of those leaks... sounds like lots of time, money, or both is going to go into this 968. I hope I'm wrong....
Boy, tough call. Id probably pass. Guess it depends how low he'll go, and how much work your willing to put into it.
Thanks guys, I did not pursue the deal. Sounded like too many repairs. Almost like the tip(tronic) of the iceberg theory.

I agree that passing was probably a good decision. Odd as it may seem, it is entirely possible for a car like a 968 to have a value of "Less than $0", if you take into accout the cost to get everything fixed. In my own case, when I was trying to sell my car for around $10K, the estimate to fix everything found in the PPI (which was full of errors, as it turns out) was about $7K, and that didn't even include fixing all the more subtle, and hard-to-reach, leaks in the engine. And my car has always been very well maintained.
