Lost the gas tank fill cap last week - don't ask long story - ordered a new one on Pelican Parts next day - came in a few days ago - doesn't fit - it is too small. Cap I ordered, which was OEM from Porsche, is 1.5 inches in diameter - my old fill cap was 2 inches diameter. Parts specialist at Pelican Parts called around and tells me I must have a European 968, where the fill caps are .5 inches larger than their U.S. counterparts. I've been to several autoparts stores - none carry 2 inch diameter fill caps. Any one know where I can order a gas tank fill cap that measures 2 inches wide that will fit my 1993 968?

Thanks.
Give Oklahoma Foreign a call. They have roughly 20 968s most of which are pretty stripped but I bet you could find a gas cap.

Thanks I called them but no help there. They never heard of a 968 with a 2 inch diameter fill inlet. Any one out there hear of this problem. Maybe a connection to a European part supplier?
Mine is about 1.5 without the threads or about 1.75 with the threads. Mine isn't a locking type, which seems to be what is on all the 968's I have seen. PET shows a locking type for the 968.
If you can't find the right cap and you want to replace the filler neck I have a filler neck for a cab.

Would be willing to part with it.

John
What's the part number on your OEM gas cap?
Have you tried Ebay UK? If you can locate one here and the shipping is too expensive, I'll happily ship it privately for you.

Let me know if I can help.
Is this what you are looking for, or do you need a different part #?

OK. I finally figured this out. I am an idiot. Apparently the metal rim that makes up the outer part of the OEM gas cap broke off some time ago and was stuck on the end of my fill pipe....and probably has been for years. See the picture. I took a screwdriver and pried it off (see second picture). No wonder my new OEM cap wouldn't fit and the end of the fill pipe measured an extra half inch. Any way, thanks for all the help! Two weeks of mystery is finally resolved. Now if only I hadn't returned the new cap to Pelican Parts already!!!

Thanks for the good laugh! <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/laugh.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

I'm sure we all have "stupid" things we could admit to but nicely keep them to ourselves! <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/sad.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />
@Lenderlee, good catch - who would have known?

On another note, you may want to cut two tiny pieces of black rubber fuel hose, and push them over those two bare screws so they don't scrape any more paint off your fuel door.
Rest assured you haven't captured the market on stupid! Lol
