Folks:

My power steering rack is leaking badly. I have to make a decision. Do I remove the rack and replace it with a rebuilt unit. I have read some disappointing stories about the quality of 'rebuilt' units that start leaking after a couple of months. Or, do I remove the rack and purchase a rebuild kit to install myself. I would appreciate feedback from forum members on their experiences with either approach. With respect to doing the rebuild myself, I would appreciate suggestions on what rebuild kit to purchase and any other parts that it is advisable to replace at the time the rack is on the work bench. I have read that some rebuild kits do not have all the required replacement parts.

Hi Bob, not wanting to say the wrong thing here, but have you ever tried to rebuild a steering rack


Its quite a difficult task indeed, and if it goes wrong can put your life at risk, if your a mechanic or engineer then I will shut up


Think the kits are all the same, and is it leaking at the right hand end / passenger side, it could well be the hoses down from the tank, that is a common problem


I would personally go for a replacement rebuilt rack, you have warranty with that

Thanks Waylander. No, I have not done this before.  I have read that "it is easy". But I am skeptical of those type of comments particularly from a vendor. So that is why I ask. 

 

Apparently not all rebuild services are created equal. Does anyone have a source for a quality rebuilt rack preferably in Canada but US will do? Someone had recommended Auto Zone as their racks are rebuilt by a reputable company in Arizona, but I have not been able to find one. 

Im with Wallander. But if youre interested, theres a good description of the process in a long thread on the PP 924/944/968 forum started by a guy whos resurrecting a 944.

Problem with the rebuild kit is that it doesn't come with everything and if some internal plastic part/shim is bad, what will you do? Rebuilt unit likely optimal option for this fix.


Another problem was the DAPO / shop put hydraulic fluid instead of ATF in the unit.

So use the right fluid.
