Has anyone replaced the stock 968 shifter/boot assembly with a 993 shifter boot/assembly ?

Anything special that you had to do to make it fit ?

Hoping this works as a plug and play since I just bought one which should be here in a week or so.
are you referring to the shifter or the shift knob?

the shifter is the metal piece onto which the shift knob goes. from what i can see, the design is similar. the pin location will determine whether or not that works.

if you are talking about the shift knob, i'm not sure about that one specifically, but i know many people have tried many shift knobs, none with any real success. there is always a buzz. the problem is that our shifter has rubber isolator blocks in it, and it has sufficient mass. together they result in a damping of the vibrations that end at the shifter. if indeed the 993 design is like ours, then it just might work. the ring at the bottom may or may not fit the leather though.
Maybe I'll be able to answer my own question and give some more info...

- the bottom open end metal part of the shifter that fits over the shift rod (thingamajic coming out of the rubber boot) is the same size both shifters...thats 1 good thing

- both shifters have the same size rubber vibration collar - this is the part that fits on the top end of the shift rod...thats 2 good things

- the inside length of of the metal part of both shifters have the same the same exact length...thats 3 good things

Now this is just an 'assumption' but the 968 shifter has an addittional rubber vibration collar that fits at the base of the shifter and it looks like that part also will fit the base of the 993 shifter.

I'll look up some part numbers and take some pictures. Hopefully I'll have this figured out when my new blue/aluminum 993 shifter arrives.
As I recall, it was a pretty simple install. I cut an inch off the top of the shifter to lower it and secured the boot to the shift knob with a tiewrap. When I figure out why I can't upload a picture, i'll show you the end result.

OK, here's the picture.
Looks nice - does it buzz?
that's a 993 shifter??? looks like a later one
I bought it in '05 on eBay where it was offered as a 993 item. I really didn't care as it had the correct shift pattern and looks good, so it may not be. Does it buzz? Well, it has a small rattle, not really a buzz, in 1, 3 and 5 at idle, but I think it just needs a minor fore/aft adjustment of the mount on the torque tube. Since it was a major PITA to get to those bolts, I'll live with it until I feel like taking the console apart again.
