PCA has their own evaluation, and price guides. It came in handy when I fought USAA for 2 years. They tried to give me 6500 for my 951 that had about 200 miles on a major over haul, with receipts for everything. They ended up shelling out 18k in the end.
Anthony, so sorry to hear about the accident and your injuries. I wish you a quick and full recovery.
Fax the insurance company the last 4-5 years of service receipts. When my 968 was totaled they offered something like $10,500. I then sent them the last few years of service records (some were relatively major repairs by the previous owner) and they got their offer up to about $12,500. (like earning $2K for an hour of work!).
Also, don't overlook the potential of buying back the totaled car. I got mine back for about $1,400 and there were lots of good parts still in the car -- even if I didn't want to disassemble it to sell parts, I think I might have gotten $3000.00 or so from people who were interested in the whole car for the engine and trans (completely undamaged) and other good parts. (think wheels, fenders, bumper covers, doors, etc. and a whole bunch of things).
Just this week, forum threads under "view new posts" one person is looking for a complete long block engine, another person is exploring for a used transmission (manual). Just examples of valuable parts.

WOW I am learning so much about insurance! I had no idea it could be worked out differently, I thought book value that is it. Now I am hearing there r many options to settling with insurance co.
Thanks everyone for all your help.
The insurance guy was just here.
He put through the claim.
It came back saying, because of the year of the car and make, it has to be sent to the specialty department and could take 24 to 48 hours to come back.
What should I make of that?
Is that good or bad news. He did say in CT you only get actual cash value of the car.Who knows what that is?
Anthony
read your policy and check on local laws before settling the claim

+1 and check with the CT insurance commissioner's office to confirm the actual cash value standard the insurance co asserts is the " law of the land".. I'm not suggesting they would deliberately lie to you, but they tend to interpret anything even slightly ambiguous in their favor, and do let them know you're contacting the insurance commissioners' office, just to make sure you have a clear and full understanding of your rights and recourses..that may just make them think a bit more about a fair settlement.
Thanks again for all your help. I am expecting the worse, so I already started looking at a replacement car for about $7K.
The only thing I can find is a 1989 928S4 for that price. I never owned one.
I would love another 968, but beggars cant be choosers.
Anybody have any insights as far as the 928's go.
Or am I making a big mistake.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated,
Anthony
Anthony,
That, in my opinion, would be a big mistake. My population/experience with 928's is limited to two, but both of them were nightmares in the "maintenance department". In my mind, they are basically "twice as much to break" as a 944S or 968, (both of which my population/experience is limited to one).
I'm positive others will chime in, and even vehemently disagree, but the 928 is one Porsche I personally avoid like the plague.
I agree.. I read through the 928 forum on RL, and the amount of electrical & other problems that plague those cars is quite amazing. Even at $7K, you should still have a hefty budget set aside for maintenance and upkeep on them, especially if you can't/don't want to get your hands dirty. I still want one at some point, but I 'enjoy' (don't ask my wife about this) working on cars in my spare time, so it seems like a good project to me.
don't even think it..( 928s ) , unless you're a masochist. but if you can't find another 968 right away , in the meantime a 944S is the best alternative in that price range, IMO..
If you're thinking of a 928, maybe you should consider a mid-80's Jaguar XJ-6 or Maserati.....(maintenance nightmare alert)....
JMHO,
Jay
Hello all,
They gave me $10,231.18 after deductible.
I found a 1986 Porsche 944 Turbo (951) for $9995.00.
In real nice shape. 10 miles from my house. Is it worth that much?
Any advice on what to buy would be great.
You guys are great.
Anthony
That seems to be the price the 951's have been asking for lately, not really sure they are worth that much. Depends on what you want, you will need to drive the 951 to see if you like and the lack of low end power and lag.
Depends on the mileage. The 1986-1987's tend to sell anywhere from 6-8k depending on mileage. The 1988-1989 Turbo S model which had 250HP and sport package (versus the regular Turbo's 217HP) tend to reach into the 9-15k range.
From the bunch of people I've talked to who have owned both - the 968 is a much more refined drivers car. Feels more stable at higher speeds, and of course the great body work.
Give the 951 a drive and see what you think - ultimately you're the one making the decision.
Sounds like they gave you a reasonable amount for your car, although the prices have shot up in the past few months for sales...which like you said - are making it hard to find a replacement.
Hi all,
There is a person selling a 968 on the 968 forum.
He goes by orenstein09, but I can not seem to get a reply back from him. Does any one know how to get a hold of him.
He has a 968 for sale for 10500, or best offer.
He is about 80 miles from where I live.
Thanks,
Anthony
other than his email address listed here and PM here, i don't have any other way of contacting him.
Ive owned a few 951's. They are great, and with a stock turbo potential for more power is had easily. An exhaust, and chip, and you can see near 300 ponies. Lag, shmag. 951 is an awesome tuner car. Get a PPI, and make sure its never been hit. Whats the mileage?
The mileage is 66,000.
I know it wont be as comfortable as the 968.
I have owned: 67 912
71- 911
73-914
83-944
87-944S
94-968 My Favorite
A 951 with 66K? I'd be sorely tempted, but I'd still hold out for a 968. Isn't there a bunch for sale right here on the forum?
