Hey gents,



I have a problem with my power steering. When fully turned left or right, when backing up, it starts to shock. It happens especially first drive of the day, when backing up from the driveway.

I feels like air in the system or a steeringpump not able to produce sufficient pressure. The front wheels are standard 17" cup, size 225.



Also, For some time now, the steering feels crappy. When driving on the motorway, the car seems to sway a bit. Like it has trouble to drive straight. I have checked the suspencion, rubbers and shocks for cracks and deterioration but it seems all okay. Could this also be part of the first mentioned problem?



I am replacing the cam belt at the moment and have good access to the power steering pump. Would flushing the system and refilling with fresh fluid do any good?

Oeps, sorry. Wheel size 205/50R17 I meant.

Yes, I would start by draining and refilling the reservoir with fresh automatic transmission fluid (not power steering fluid). Repeat the siphon-and-fill process several times, turning the wheel from lock to lock about five times during each step. Good luck.

No, unless you want to crack open the lines, which is more trouble than it's worth. Just take a siphon, or even a turkey baster, and suck the fluid out of the reservoir from the top. Then fill it with fresh ATF (Dexron III is fine), turn on the engine, rotate the wheel about five times to each extreme, and repeat the process several times. Maybe I've just been lucky, but just replacing the old power steering fluid with fresh stuff has significantly improved the steering behavior (primarily in the form of eliminating noise at at the extremes of the steering wheel's travel) in several of my cars, including the 968.
