Full Version: Rattle "behind the dash" somewhere

Hi everyone,

Since purchasing my 92 968 tiptronic last year there has been this really annoying rattle behind the dash. It is only noticeable when the car is stationery and idling - and is worse when it is in drive or the A/C is on. I don't think it is related to drivetrain or AC however - more so that when it is in drive or the AC comes on the revs drop ever so slightly so the rattle is more pronounced.

Does anyone have a clue as to what it may be? I have done the usual "pressing" on many areas of the dash/glass/steering wheel/cluster etc but nothing seems to make a difference - so to me it sounds like it is either the dash is loose or it is coming from behind the dash in the first place.

Any help would be appreciated as it is really stopping me from enjoying the car! I have just got it back from a full respray and many of the rattles have gone from loose panels/broken headlight mounts etc however this one just won't go away.

I can't hear it outside the car - only inside so I am led to believe that it is coming from behind the dash somewhere.

Thanks for any help!

Regards,

Nick
Motor mounts starting to go?
there are any number of things that could be rattling back there. the heater vents and ducting are the first things i would look at.
If all else fails and you winter the car in your garage there is always Clark's Garage. It's not that difficult to remove the dash, tidy up all the aging bits with sealants, tie-wraps etc. While your at it you can verify the AC actuator rods and plastic bits that tend to break.
Cool thanks for the replies guys. I think I will just start pulling the dash apart until either the rattle goes or there's nothing left!

Engine mounts were done about 1000kms ago so I don't think it is them.
you can start by pulling the instrument cluster and heater vents. that will give you decent access without too much effort
Great - thanks for the tip! Will get onto this over the weekend!
