For those of you with a 6 or 10 speaker car that have replaced front tweeters, did you manage to keep the factory tweeter 'covers'? If so how do you open them up to get the old tweeters out? Thx

I was going to add this to my stereo install post....still have to do that....



First pull the door panel off.



Then there is a threaded plastic ring that holds the speaker to the panel, unscrew that.



Remove the tweeter from door panel.



Using a small tool, just pull on the metal grate that is on top of the speaker. I used the hook tool in the picture below.















Once I removed the cover, I used a drill to drill all the way around the speaker, then I used a Dremel to cut between the holes and remove the speaker, leaving the frame left to install the new Focal tweeter in it:

Once I got the OEM ring to fit the new speaker, I used a high quality construction adhesive (Locktite PL Premium) that I had sitting around (always working on the house) and potted the speaker in with the stuff. I let it set up somewhat and installed the speaker in the door panel and screw the plastic ring on to hold it in place.



Just insert the metal ring back in and you are good to go.



NOTE: I chipped the black paint on the speaker grill when I removed it with the tool....you might want to paint it again with spray paint before re-installation if you are a perfectionist.



My new tweeters rock! I also had to run all new wiring to them from the amp in the spare tire area. Good luck!

I did pretty much the exact same thing, but didn't take as many pictures! lol It works great, but of course you do sacrifice the OEM tweeter housing.

I did the exact same thing with my Infinity components. Worked out perfect.

My metal grill cover is dented.  It looks, from above, that it is just press fit into place?

Paul - if you have the ten speaker setup (like I do), what did you do for the midrange door speaker? I installed two-ways, leaving the mid empty, but the sound is not ideal. Is there a three-way setup that fits?

After removing the grill, I find that my tweeter cover is just a cover.  No tweeter.  I know that there was a subwoofer at some point that was removed.  There's an amp in the trunk that gets warm, so presumably it is powering something.  I'm thinking that I need to start over from scratch.  One more project on the wish/waiting list...

My JLAudio tweeters fit directly into the factory housing - no glue. Small glitch was that the stock grille was too shallow for the new tweeter, so rather than two layers of perforated steel between me and the speaker, I just left the stock on off. Not perfect, but looks pretty good.
