I dropped my ‘93 Cab off this morning for installation of a new top.   The anticipation of being able to see out the back window again is scintillating!

Got my '93 Cab back from the upholstery place today.  Looks great!  And what a pleasure to have a completely clear back window again. (One of my biggest gripes with the car is the lack of a glass back window ...  and don't get me started on the idiotic dual motor system ... I'm firmly in manual mode).  If anyone in the S.F. Bay Area needs a top replaced or any upholstery work, I've got the guy.  Next I'll being doing some research on getting my wheels re-finished

I took some and I would post them if I could figure out how to post a pic.   Every other forum I post on has a little picture icon that allows me to choose pics from my photo library.   I’ve tried all of the above little icons and none of them allow me to access my photo library.  Then I looked at the “968 Forums How To Guide” but couldn’t find anything about how to post a pic.

Good job! Installing a convertible top takes skill, so great job finding someone to replace/install it.



The PO replaced the top on ours just before we bought it, so I hope it'll be a long time before we have to replace it...but, just in case, we have a new top on the garage shelf.

The guy had great reviews and a competitive price.   He was booked up three months in advance, which I thought was a good sign.   I also liked that he recommended I source the top myself instead of trying to squeeze some more money out of me.   And I swear the car handled better on the way home with the new top!  (or at least it felt that way … hehehehe)

When I press "More reply options", in brings up an option to attach files from my computer near the bottom of the page.  So as long as you've saved pictures of what you want to attach, you should be able to select them here.

HI lbpesq, greetings from Australia, my 968 cap is still in USA. I am doing some 'refurbishment' for it and one part is to replace the top. Your new top looks very nice with the color I like to have on the replacement top.

So could you kindly tell to me where you get the top and with what cost and also who was to installer.

Hi Mark.  The top was from Sierra Tops.   You can find them online at autotopsdirect.com.  I paid about $700 (maybe $750?).   Installation was done by Frank at Super Auto Upholstery in Hayward, CA.   I had to make an appointment several months in advance.    He took four days and charged $1200 labor.  It’s not an easy job.   Even Flash, the guy who started this site, did all his own work, and even designed and manufactured several mods for the car, including a supercharger, farmed out top replacement.

A new top was the most satisfying "mod" I’ve done to my car. A rare picture with it up. I generally put it down in the spring and leave it down until I put it away in the fall.

Being able to see through the rear window is indeed nice. I tried to talk my guy into doing a zipper like flash did, but he told me it would double the labor. My cost was inline with Bill’s although my top was a little cheaper ($600) I chose the mid-priced Haartz option. $1800 total.

Both tops look fantastic however I wonder if leaving the top closed for so long is the right call. I thought it was good to leave it closed as much as possible. I always close mine when not in use. Wish I could say it looks as good as these but it is not bad. Plastic rear windows are a pain and and I have tried to keep mine clean and polished but there is some scratching going on. I still use my top in the motorized mode as it seems fine. I always put it up after a drive as things are not compressed in the folded mode and creases are not left to stay for memory from being compressed.

I haven’t had any problems. I just need to partially close it and let it sit in the sun for a few minutes when I close it up. (It’s still new and really tight)

As for scratches, I have a soft microfiber towel I lay on the window when I put the top down so the folded window doesn’t rub on its self all summer. What little crease there is in the window disappears in the sun in about 5 minutes. 

I don’t open and close my top as it’s a PITA to close it with the boot in place. I never drive it with the top up. 

PSA from my top guy.  NEVER wipe the dust or dirt off a dry rear window.   ALWAYS get it wet first, then clean it.  

 

I’ve always used a towel inserted in the folded rear window when I put the top down.

Hi guys, it's time for  new cab top. I'm wondering how many of you have been able to get the zip out rear window that flash did? If so where and how much did it cost? I'm just outside of Philly, so any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!
