A friend is searching for a 968 engine ( to be used in a 968 track car whose engine blew up where the cost of a complete rebuild would probably be a lot more than an engine from a salvage yard ) .
Anyone here have suggestions for any salvage yards ( in the U.S. only ) where one could source either a whole engine or even a 968 engine block, from some totaled 968s ..? Thanks .
This doesn't answer your question directly, but as an alternative to a replacement 968 engine, there's a company called Boost Brothers Garage that makes a conversion kit to allow a direct drop-in of an 07K VW 2.5 liter inline 5. Believe it or not, this engine is actually shorter and slightly lighter than the stock 968 engine, and if desired, in turbo form, can easily and reliably produce 400+ hp. Plus it doesn't have the 968's annoying balance shaft belts, is available for a few hundred dollars, and makes a really unique sound. If I hadn't sold my 968, I would have gone with this swap.

There's another possibility if swapping motors doesn't give too much heartburn...an all aluminum LS swap. Lots more power and parts (including performance parts) are readily available and more reasonably priced than Porsche parts.

yeah, they are aware of that ..Renegade conversion, but they kept hearing ( in spite of all the positive aspects ) that no one has gotten the car to run nearly as well as with an OE engine.. so they’re apprehensive to go that route.,
I always thought an LS engine in a 944/968 is just....... wrong. It seems like anybody considering that route should just buy a Corvette. But that's just personal opinion. The 07K swap, on the other hand, sounds insanely cool, and it's what I would have done had I kept my 968.
The LS swap always seems much maligned as a "Chebby" hack. I have never done one but looking around at a few that have been done by people it strikes me as a great balance of reliability and 400 HP without really even breathing hard. Not sure why "winding" up an 07k is any safer than "winding" up a 3L 968 turbo build extracting something north of 400hp. I believe the LS motor weighs a few pounds more than the 968 motor but very few lbs more to be a non factor from suspension and that 50/50 balance. I believe the TPC version of the mounts etc...has been a proven design and several like Van Svenson are reliably tracking them in the American Endurance Racing Series. The allure of a cheap VAG engine seems to end quickly when you do all the thing necessary to get to 400 or north of 400 where in nearly stock form an entry level LS is producing nearly 400 with tuners on every street corner in America as well as a steady supply of "go fast" parts when 400 just wont do the trick anymore.

I never really wanted a Corvette or a VW Golf but one day I would love to pull up behind a GT3 on the back straight at Summit Point in my 968 even if it has a "chebby" Then drive it home on pump gas smiling that it never even broke a sweat or was boosted within an a half pound of its life.
