Like many cabs out there, my rear shelf is warped and sunbaked.
Anyone have any advice regarding removal and replacement, and is straightening it using heat an option?
Thanks,
Matt
hmmm - i've never actually seen one warped. i've seen plenty of cooked carpet, but the plastic hasn't been mangled.
it's plastic over wood, so theoretically, if you wanted to remove the carpet, you could use a heat gun, some clamps, and some really good adhesive, and put it back down.
removal is easy. there are a couple of small nuts in the rear, and 1 screw on each side. remove those, lift up and out.
By rear shelf do you mean the upper rear part that is attached to the convertible top and made of plastic and covered with black headliner type material or do you mean the top of the rear storage compartments which is covered with interior colored carpet? I can help you with both. Just need to know which one you mean.
oop - didn't think about that piece. that one is a bugger, as the clips are NLA, and most of them break during removal
I have a stash of those clips brand new if you ever need some of them.
yes, i need a few
please contact me at sales@design1racing.com with a number to call you at
You can get the fastening clips from Auto Atlanta.. and I'm sure from other reputable Porsche parts dealer probably cheaper. I ordered a bunch when I redid the top.
Part# 94150471510 -- $4.90 a piece.
sunset told me they were NLA. i just called, and they have them. 8 are now on their way to me.
Unfortunately I almost choked when I saw that price for a clip. I was able to the part for less than half of that price.
Flash, I'll be sending you an email.
no need. they were pretty cheap. ordered them without hesitation.
that will give me a chance to do so more sound deadening too.
Yes, that's the piece, any advice regarding removal, and any ideas regarding straightening it?
Don't know that there is any fixing that one. That is the worst I've ever seen.
As far as removal, two screws on the sides near the seat belt pivots and a panel tool to gently pry up,on the piece until each clip releases (or breaks).
The major problem I have had is locating a source for the material that covers the piece. It is a headliner type of material that has a vinyl sort of backing. Regular headliner material will just create a mess trying to glue it down properly.

Yes, it kind of surprised me too. The car is in great shape, but this piece was really hammered by the SoCal sun. I wonder if it is because it's a very early 92, and maybe Porsche improved the design for later years. The warping on the front edge is so bad that the little hatch doors won't close all the way.
If I can find the correct material to recover these I have an extra that is perfectly straight. I've been looking for quite some time and I just can't find the material.
I am less worried about the covering and more concerned about the warpage. Are you looking to get rid of the one you have? PM me if you are looking to sell.
Don't want to part with my "spare" until I know I can rework the old ones to look new <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/sad.png" class="smilie" alt="" /> sorry
wowo - that's serious
by the way, a new one is $1400
So, how many clips are required?
8 in total?
I may also order a set for spares
Thanks
Thanks for the info, everyone. If someone out there has one in good shape they want to part with for a reasonable price, PM me. It's on my list of things to do, albeit toward the bottom of the list.
It's a total of 8 clips to replace all the ones on that piece. If anyone needs them I have a good amount of them that I will let go for $2 each. It is less than half what a dealer wants and the ones I ordered from the dealer turned out to be the wrong ones. Feel free to PM me if you need them.
