The problem is that I don't know how to unplug the big cable set from the "Bosch motronic" metal box. I see a black plastic device with small screws but I don't what to do at this step.



The guys from Promax UK gave me a step by step procedure, but it deals with the 944 unit and exteriorly it looks somewhat different.

its's easier than you think - no unscrewing.



there's a black plastic lever that secures the metal plug into the DMA. You kinda rotate / lift the lever up, and it will ease tension on the plug and then pop it out.

This site drives me nuts with Firefox so I understand.

Yes, something's not right... The forum software is not proposing the correct filetype or name when a link is clicked.



If you right-click the link and select 'Save link as...' and name the file correctly, you get the correct file and it opens fine locally from your own HD.



I'm not going back to IE, so it has to work under Firefox <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />
There is a fix for the forum software that Eric mentioned months ago but he has not loaded it. I guess I can't bitch too much as the board is free.
There was a write up in the May 2006 issue of Excellence for a chip swap in the 968. It's on page 145, with pictures showing the whole procedure. There's even a before/after dyno chart for the stock vs. ProMax 7100A chip.



Excellence does sell back issues, which you can order online at http://www.excellence-mag.com/back_issues.html or by phone at 415-382-0580. The cost is $8.

works just fine in my Firefox. Pdf opens in new tab. Make sure your firefox is up-to-date.
Not one to rush into anything, I'm finally ready to install my RacerX chip and do the airbox mod [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif[/img]

I have one question about the pdf instructions though. The pics show the chip in two different orientations, the writing on the OEM chip shows upright when it is at the top of the DME, the aftermarket chip is opposite.

Does it matter? (I would assume it does.) If so, can someone please explain which direction the RacerX chip is supposed to be oriented. It's been so long I can't find any instructions and Speed-6.com seems to consist solely of an ad for a Shelby Super Snake.

Great, now I know where the DME resides! Given that there are at least 3 variants of OE chips and a number of after market chips, can any chip be fitted to a 968 and which is best for my '93 UK model coupe? Not sure at this time if my car has the strengthened con rods fitted or not so I guess this will have some bearing on what power o/p is appropriate?
the short answer is "no" - early ECUs do not accept other chips - there are very few of these out there though (at least in the states)



93 should have the later ECU, but definitely check the part number on the lid - you are looking for ECU# 0261-203-070



the rod issue is more rpm related than power related, so as long as you aren't sustaining high rpms, then you should not have to worry about that - that being said, if it is a concern, then i would avoid a chip that raises the rev limit too much



the rs barn chip outputs better than any other chip, but it may not be enough over other chips to justify import duties, and if cost is an issue, you might be better suited to a chip that originates in your area

Does anyone know the size of the torx screws? My toolkit is very lacking in the torx department (well, overall actually) so I need to go out and buy a torx screwdriver. Might as well buy the right size.
I did not need to remove the torx screws to open DME. Just needed to pry up the tabs. Also had to remove a plastic cover over the chip it's self.
