Looking forward to being a part for the Porsche / 968 owners club! My son and I just purchased a 92 968, scheduled for delivery next Saturday.
We are hoping to get a few items sorted out, with the information on this forum, and getting a few miles in this fall (before snow flies)
Can't wait to hear more and see some pics.
Welcome!

Welcome! If you are new to this model, it would benefit you greatly to read up on the belt issues that these cars can face if the owner is not careful about maintenance. The urge to drive your new car is strong, but it may be prudent to wait if the belt condition and age is unknown.
Welcome. Go thru the PPI anyway and see what else needs to be looked at before hitting the road.
Thanks everyone! We have her home and have cleaned her up a but it looks like our first project will be to replace the clutch! A bit disappoint as we purchased it from a franchise dealer (not Porsche) about 9 hours away and they surely must have know the clutch was bad! Any suggestion on where or what clutch kit to purchase would be greatly appreciated. The car has 70K miles and my guess is it has never been replaced. I will try to figure out how to post a pic!
do NOT buy those "all in one" kits. you will get the wrong pressure plate.
you need the green stripe pressure plate, which is specific to the 968. call sunset imports in oregon. the issue is that you may have to wait for it, as it is not always in stock. there is a recent thread here about this, and i believe it also included the correct part number
Pm me if you want some advice, I just finished the job on my 92.

Getting the correct pressure plate is the key.
Many folks use Sunset in Oregon for parts. (Not a sponsor, no affiliation)

Thank! I have talked to two shops. Both are foreign specialty shops and do a lot of Porsche work and they both recommended the Sachs kit so I will mention this to them. The interesting part is one shop quoted 4 hours labor and the other quoted 8 hours labor! Any idea on that the correct labor time is?
do NOT get a kit. it will be wrong! they will use a substituted part for the pressure plate. it bolts up just fine, but the pedal feel is horrible. this happens all the time. the correct pressure plate will have a green strip on it. the wrong one, and the one that comes in those kits, is teal blue.
you have to buy the parts separately to get the right pressure plate.

Thank you!
no worries
original part number is 964.116.027.90
the original wrong part numbers are 964.116.027.01 and 964.116.028.00
here is strip info:

also, it appears that sachs is using an incorrect part number in ALL of their cross reference sheets, which is why you have to get the pressure plate from porsche, and use the porsche part number, not the sachs part number
I would say that the mech who quoted 4 hours knows more about 968s. The clutch is far easier to replace than the 944 clutch, the 8 hour mech probably doesn't know the difference.

agreed. i've done it in 3.5 (don't ask me how i got so practiced at it to get my time down that low). 944 mechanics frequently think the 968 clutch is like the 944, and it isn't (either that or they want to bilk a 968 guy who doesn't know any better, and charge them 944 hours for a 968 job)
Be very carefull ordering the plate at the dealer too. Over here the part number remained the same, but you will still end up with a blue one! When I did my clutch I asked the guy to make an inquiry at the warehouse and they would have sent me a blue one. The green ones weren't available at the time (about two years ago).
Check post #9. Read carefully and make sure that whomever you buy it from, they send the correct one over. Every shop THINKS they can deliver, but reality mostly proves to be different.
did they send you only the plate, or the plate as a part of a "kit"? so far, i've only seen it sent wrong from the dealer when a part of a kit.
