Full Version: BIGGEST BANG-FOR-THE BUCK ENGINE MODS

Well, I have owned my 93 cab since February, and it has taken all this time to sort out all the little things that needed to be done to cherry out the car.......including a new top. But, as I near the end of my list of repairs, I am looking ahead to what performance mods I could do to the car to get the biggest bang for the buck.

My list includes the following:

1. Performance exhaust (custom, B&B, or Flash's?)

2. Chip the car (Speed 6?)

3. Larger throttle body (whose?)

4. Variable pressure fuel pressure regulator (whose?)

5. Spark plugs (power/driveability?)

Comments from others on this board on my list with recommendations of which items and brands to consider, as well as any items that I should consider adding to the list, would be appreciated.

My perception is that I should be able to purchase the hardware to do the items above for a few thousand, but that anything more advanced would require large dollars; so, I am interested in keeping to a budget of about $2000. I will install all the hardware, except for the custom exhaust (if I go with a custom unit).

On the airbox that has been mentioned before, my research........particularly with the 911's I have owned over the years showed that Porsche did a damned good job with their airboxes. I have seen mods that go anywhere from the K&N system to "swiss cheesing" the stock airbox, to deletion of the airbox entirely. Consensus has always been that these mods produce a change in sound, but no discernable power increases. So, if there is documented evidence that mods to the airbox are worth it, I would add that to my above list.

Thanks in advance for your comments.

The B&B is an easy install and can be found at a good price. I think it has a great sound! I love mine. I hope this post opens up discussion on changing to the K&N system. In the past, I've not heard enough positives to make me that the jump.
I won't say the B&B adds anything to the power of the car. I will say that it sounds 100% better then stock. Very throaty, this enhances the driving experience IMHO.
they only make a panel filter for this car - the sound increase is nill - airflow increase is measurable - do not over oil

we have completed an intake filter design that works better on the bench manometer in manometer testing than anything else out there - final dyno testing is on the 8th - sound increase is there, but just a deep throaty growl at full throttle

th throttle body is a possibility, but there are some concerns - the resonant induction intake times pulese to increase pressure - changing the velocity or volume of air a th throttle body has me concerned that that will get scrwed up - i will be talking with a throttle body guy when i get back from cancun next week

i wil be doing some dyno testing on the 8th to determine the real effects of the regulator
Bob,

Is the air intake filter system going to be available on the market if it test Okay?
yes - i'm pretty sure we'll be setting that up through www.968engineering.com

i don't want to spill the beans entirely, but the thing works - we hit perfection - i'll detail it all in an article coming out in about 3 weeks

the dyno testing is just to tell us for sure how much power we got - it is VERY noticeable
Flash,

How did the dyno go? Did you test the new Promax chips at the same time you tested this new intake? We all would like to know the results....

i got stuck in cancun and didn't get back here (plane had an engine die)

i am now trying to reschedule the test

Larry,

I went ahead and installed a K&N in all my Porsches, not because I thought they would yield significant seat-of-the-pants results, but because of their lifetime warranty. I think they save one money over long periods of time over the Mahle paper filters. If they add a little horsepower (1-2 horses at most, I'd say), that's fine, too.
How about the sound? Do you hear a big difference?

Larry, the only one that is noticeably louder is the cone filter conversion that is in my heavily modified turbo. There is no audible difference in the other cars.

Good call. You are right, this is a very easily overlooked item. It should be checked every 20k miles.
Thanks! That gives me something to do as the rain covers my state this weekend.
