I replaced the passenger side sunroof gear yesterday and about 8" of the headliner came loose around the sunroof opening over the passenger door. I cannot see any adhesive and the sunroof seal does not have enough grip to hold it. How do I get this back in place?
have you tried 3M Super 77?
if the seal is the type i am thinking, like what runs along the door jams, you should be able to recrimp the row of metal fingers inside a little bit with a pair of pliers to make it grab better
Thanks Flash. I think it is a different seal. The headliner is still attached at the door jamb. It is the top edge along the sunroof opening that is loose from the back corner of the opening to a point about 8" forward. I have not tried any adhesive because I cannot see any evidence of prior adhesive, but I don't see any tabs or other means to hold it in place.
hmm - i popped ron's in, but i could have sworn it was the same kind of c-channel rubber/plastic coated metal encased thing like in the door jam down along the side of the door
There is a very small C-channel trim, but I think a shot of Super 77 and careful tucking in will do the trick. It must have had some kind of adhesive originally. It may just be dried up. Hell they glued EVERYTHING down in that car. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/mad.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />
yeah - that's what i remembered - cool
so, you can probably recrimp that trim to grab better, and 3M Super 77 is the best stuff i have ever found for this kind of thing
OK. Now I understand what you are talking about. I did not realize the plastic trim had metal in it. I will try to find the 3M adhesive you recommend. Thanks!
you can get that stuff at home depot - spray can - about 4 bucks
I picked up a can at lunch and will give it a try tonight. $9 at the hardware store across the street, but Home Depot is 20 minutes away, so I paid for the convenience. Thanks again.
I'm back. I removed the trim piece in the problem area and spread the inside of it with a screwdriver. I cleaned the edge of the sunroof opening and sprayed the 3M Super 77 on the lip and the edge of the headliner. I pulled the headliner up along the lip and clamped it. Then I placed the trim piece over it and clamped it with channel locks. After 30 minutes, the 8" length of headliner was completely out again. It looks like I am either going to need a stronger adhesive, or possibly some kind of clip that slips over the edge of the sunroof opening with a tooth to grip the headliner. (Or I give up and take it to an upholstery shop.)
