OK guys, here is my contribution to the forums for this month.
After reading this thread regarding hall senders -
Hall Sender Availability Thread - I decided to do 15 minutes of research on finding a more cost conscious solution to a $200 hall sender replacement. I quickly located a replacement hall sender for the Siemens HKE7101 sender used on our cars -
Replacement Hall Sender. CYHME301 is the part number that is a direct replacement (see page 3). Keep in mind, this does not replace the entire hall sender assembly but just the sender itself (this is the part that goes bad.) The senders are available for 5.50 EURO each in quantities of 10 ->
Price List.

If this is as good as it seems, count me in for one, heck, make it two.
I was just relaying the information. (My hall sender seems OK although I have had some intermittent hesitation recently.) I guess I could put the buy together if need be. We would just need to buy the minimum 10.
Brett
At that price, I'd buy 2 just to have spares <now kicking myself for spending $240 plus installation for a $10 part> Count me in for 2 in a group buy (if you do it).
Thanks for the eye-opener Brett. I wouldn't have know what to look for, or that this could even be done.
Best,
Buzz
I will take a couple as well.
But I believe what we would be ordering is the sensor inside the Porsche part. So some modification would need to occur similar to using a Bosch O2 sensor instead of the Porsche part.
Brett please correct me if I am wrong and could you let us know more about the modification needed to install.
Thanks
Brett - where do we PayPal the $$ - just put together a price plus S&H and add another 10% for your OH!!!
I'm in as well. I guess the thing to do is get two - the first one gets messed up in the conversion/installation, and the second one becomes the winner. Let us know the procedure.
Bruce, you are correct in that it would be replacing the functional part inside the Porsche part (housing). It looks like it would be a seamless integration especially since the part was designed as a direct replacement for this sensor. I'll pull the hall sender off of my spare engine and confirm. Next, I guess we can put together a list of those who are interested and I'll order the units. It is probably a good idea to keep the order somewhat small in case we run into problems with the unit. I won't bother with prepayments since the parts are so cheap. Heck, a dozen is only 66 Euros.
So next step I'll confirm the ease of replacement. In the meantime, those who are interested can just post here so we can get a headcount.

The connector on or for the factory hall sensor often falls apart. I am wondering if the extra plastic parts of the factory hall sender are likely to be reusable?

Appears that I received an updated unit from Porsche. Beefier than the Siemens unit. Though with the price difference I could have bought many of the above units.

I am 99.5% sure that new genuine Bosch connectors are available as well for a couple of bucks a piece.
Brett
Count me in for 2 also...and the Bosch connectors if they can be located at a reasonable cost.
Sam
I'd go in as well, 2 for me since I have two 968 motors.
Brett, do you know the exchange rate for the Euro right now? I am sure it is more than the US Dollar bu not sure exactly how much more. Thanks for your efforts. Bob Blackwell.
Bob,
Believe the current exchange rate is somewhere around 1 Euro += $1.20 to $1.22. I'm in for 2 as I've been having some hesitation.

5.5 Euro = 6.62640 US Dollar
5.5 US Dollar (USD) = 4.56507 Euro (EUR)
Median price = 1.20430 / 1.20480 (bid/ask)
Minimum price = 1.20030 / 1.20080
Maximum price = 1.20760 / 1.20780
Guess I better get 2 like everyone else! Count me in. Remember to add a few $$ for your S&H, duties, etc. Thanks in advance for all your hard work in sourcing these things Brett!
I'd like to jump on this bandwagon too. Put me down for 2 also. And thanks for your efforts in doing the research.

Thanks for the good work. Sign me up for two to put in the 'just in case' pile.
I just replaced a reference (Hall effect) sensor in our 944 with a BMW part. $55.94 including shipping for a new Bosch sensor from AutoPartsWarehouse.com.
Works fine, the only difference is that the BMW sensor (Bosche #0 261 210 002) lead is 9" longer than the Porsche sensor. The 944 uses two of these sensors, while the 968 uses just one. If you are willing to drill out and install a new sensor in the housing, you might be willing to shorten the lead on a BMW sensor instead. I just made a 2-3" loop in the lead with cable ties and it worked fine. Best price I have seen for the Porsche sensor(Bosche #0 261 210 003) (with the shorter lead) was around $100 US shipping included.
On the Bosche sensor the metal end cap is crimped on next to the O ring. Removing the crimping by grinding would mean that you would have to reattach the cap in another way (epoxy?). Distance from the sensor to the surface is also important, if the Seiman sensor is a different shape or strength, the Seiman sensor may not work correctly. My sensor had an open, meaning a broken connection between the sensor housing and the plug. Replacing the sensor in the old housing would not have corrected that problem.
If anyone finds a source for replacement plugs for these sensors, I would be interested. Since they are molded I imagine they would have a lead atached and have to be spliced to the sensor lead. My 968 sensor lead has a cracked plug and splicing a new plug would be easier than pulling the valve cover to install a new sensor.
