What's the general concensus on caliper color? Black? Red? I've attached a pic of mine now. Would I be crazy to go red?

opinions vary widely on this one - some people like the flashy (pardon the pun) look of color in there - personally, i like the simple understated look of black because i want the attention drawn to the wheel, not the caliper, especially if the caliper is stock - i think a lot of that decision though, has to do with the color of the car, and the desire for accent - it's really about "what do you like?"



one thing to consider though, no matter which color you choose, is that paint (regardless of which spray can you buy) never works out very well - it doesn't shed brake dust well, generally does not handle the heat well, and often flakes off - if you are going to change the color, get them powder coated - a number of people have done this now, and seem to be very happy

I love the way red calipers look, especially if there are some 18" wheels on the car..If you're thinking of painting them id either redo them in black or go red!

I just re painted my calipers black.

The red ones detract from the overall looks of the car.

be EXTREMELY careful if you ever plan to bleed your brakes - the paint will come right off if you get any fluid on it - also, do whatever you can to keep brake dust off of them - rattle can paint does not cure like catalyzed paint, and consequently will much more easily be affected by the dust

I used a 2 part caliper paint made by "G2". It is a self leveling brush on application. The brush marks disappear as the paint cures. The finish is a high gloss. I chose black.There is enough for all 4 calipers and did not require removal of the calipers from the car. After the paint was cured I made stencils using the Porsche font and used white hi temp paint to re spray the PORSCHE logo. I have had my PM replace rotors once and pads twice ( changed pads from hard to softer pads to eliminate brake squeak) and have had no problems with the coating. It is a weekend project as the coating has to cure on the car for 24 hrs. before you can drive.

Thanks for the input. Looks like I'll stay with black for now. My calipers were powder coated and then stenciled exactly like Silvy's.

well it's about time somebody came up with a spray paint that worked - glad to hear it - i'll have to check that stuff out

I think some people had success with High temp engine paint..I believe it was the Plasti-Kote

nope - that stuff comes off after 6 months to a year - so does the engine enamel stuff - i tried a number of different prep methods, and a few different brands of both, and got somthing that worked for a while, but then ultimately failed



that's why i was so glad to see the home powder coating kit



i'll have to check out this new paint too though - seems easier



i have one caliper with the clear starting to crack on it, so it won't be long (unless i change calipers all together)

I know Eric powder coated his calipers once (red) and they looked perfect, they looked 100% factory, in fact I was thinking of asking him if he still did that on the side.

Wasn't there a post a while back about VHT brake caliper paint? I haven't had time to look for it yet, but has anyone used it and, if so, is it holding up?

I have painted calipers for years and never, not once did I ever experience any issues such as excessive heat, flaking, dust issues, etc..... Not once. Tried both the brush on kits as well as the VHT spray versions. Both works very well. I also applied high temp clear to protect the paint and once again no issues to this day. One of my cars has had custom brakes that were painted over 5 years ago. Several sets of pads and rotors and well over 100k of hard miles, once again no problems. It is all in the prep and application.



As for color or taste, really depends on the wheels as well as the color of the car, but as most wheels allow viewing of the brakes, any car enthusiast is going to rate your brakes as part of the overall package when viewing your car.

It's time to try painting my brake calipers, but I can't seem to find the VHT paint that I want to try. Can I get a lead on who sells it?

I'm on the lookout as well...I've seen a few around online but haven't seen anything specific. I'm planning on using the "G2" kit for the calipers...if/when you find the VHT paint, let us know as I hope to repaint the PORSCHE logo using stencils with a contrasting paint color. I hope to tackle this soon after my wheel refinish project is complete.

Ironically, the manufacture of VHT is PJH Brands, who's corporate offices are a couple of miles from my home in Scottsdale. They didn't return my phone call yesterday, but if necessary I'll knock on their door next week. I suspect that VHT may be available through motorcycle dealers as are PJ1 products.



I'll report what I find.

Hope you guys like this one. I used Dupli-Color Ceramic.

I started this thread months ago and decided to stay with the black, but last week got a wild hair and painted the calipers RED with new stenciling and man what a difference. The red on my Polar Silver really looks great. Next stop.....maybe Yellow??
