Fooling around trying the cover from another car, and noticed that it bends down the antenna, not flattening it, but clearly bending it.

Does the antenna hold up okay with a cover on the car? If not, is there a cover out there or a technique one can use to protect the antenna? Does the aerial possibly detach from the mounting base?

I'm finishing up my cabinet project and filling the air in the garage with dust from saws and sanding, so would really like to keep the 968 covered
Dust collection system? Sorry I have a cab so antenna is not an issue for me, does the coupe one unscrew?
Yes, you can unscrew the whip portion of the antenna leaving the base

I unscrew mine for the cove...but have wondered if there's a common (but better reception) replacement antenna "out there" that will screw in. For example something off another German car that's newer or?

Either...

1) Unscrew the antenna mast before installing the cover, then reinstall antenna mast after removing cover.

Or...

2) Add a plastic grommet to the cover at the spot where the cover would rest on the base. Then the antenna mast can be passed through the grommet. I believe you can find something like the plastic grommets at either HD or Lowes. If not, do an internet search on "grommet" and you will find a resource. I have metal ones, but I doubt you would want a metal grommet coming into contact with the paint.

BTW- my VW Jetta antenna mast fits on my 968 antenna base, so the thread/mounting point must be common or universal. Whether or not you can find one that gives better reception remains to be seen. I did try the 968 mast on my Jetta as it was smaller and noticed no real change in reception, FWIW.
FWIW my cover came with a grommet for just this purpose - locate the antenna & cut a hole & stick the grommet on. I never did it - it seemed like a chintzy solution - little stick-on grommet.

So when I use the cover (almost never) I just unscrew the antenna and throw it in the car.
Does someone have a source/price for a replacement antenna, mine is flat tore up from the PO putting the cover on and not having a grommit. I've searched Paragon and Pelican to no avail.

Never mind. After reading more of the search results I found the post by beachboy(?) about Euro Sport Accessories p/n 26432 and priced at $23.99.
Thanks all for the part reference at Euro Sport, I searched the usual parts sites as well, so it really help to have this part number here. Mine was all torn up also. In case you need one, they are on special at $14.95. For the deeply interested in the antenna subject, this link came up with some technical description of the antenna: http://www.antennaworld.com/2004/departmen...etaflex_d.shtml

Did the glove box repair today as well. (Oh well, I'm not a racer but knocking off the small stuff).
