This is where the temp gauge rides on a cool day - 78 - 80 degrees, no A/C on, not running the car hard, cruising along at 35 or 40 mph.



With the A/C on, the gauge drops to right above the first white line. If it's REAl hot, 95 degrees and up, with A/C on, the gauge will rise to the level in the pic in traffic. Driving on the open road at 70 - 80 mph the temp usually rides down to just above the first white line but does vary quite a bit. One minute riding low, the next at the point in the pic.



It seems to me that something is wrong with my fans/temp switches that turn them on. I've verified that with A/C on both fans are running. When I turn the car off, I can hear the fans run for a while till it cools off some. Car seems to be running perfect. NO coolant needing to be added. 156,000 miles on the car. Had a new water pump about 1.5 years ago at 130,000 miles. Has also had a new thermostat that I checked in boiling water before putting on.



What do you'all think? Do I have a problem or is this all normal and I need to go back to my cave and quit worrying about my car!!! <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/blink.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

sounds like you have a stock thermostat and stock temp fan switch



what is your coolant mix? has tap water been used in the radiator? have you flushed the radiator?

Coolant is 50/50 of the phosphate free stuff we're suppossed to run along with tap water.



Radiator is fairly new - replaced about a year ago.

Exactly how mine sits with everything stock as well. I sit right about the first white line when warmed up, will go to just below the second white line, then the t-stat opens and it goes back down. This is a slow process, but it just mingles around. I don't mind it, just take it as normal. I am always looking at my guages for worrysome, but there is never a problem.

um - still not supposed to use tap water - not that this has necessarily caused a problem, but there are still minerals in the tap water, so you have effectively negated the benefits of the phosphate free coolant



again, while it does not sound particularly out of the ordinary, it can me be made to run cooler and more importantly more stable



unfortunately, to maximize it may require boiling the radiator



at a minimum, knowing how hot it is where you are, i would change the fan switch to the low temp unit, and flush the radiator and get rid of the tap water, and use deionized or purified water, along with the phosphate free coolant



that should at least give you a more stable system

Flash, and along with your suggestions, use water-wetter?

i am - it did seem to make a small difference - sorry - forgot about that



the end result was very impressive - on the track, at 100 degrees plus outside, and 130 on the track, the needle never got above where it is in your picture - more importantly, it wasn't going up and down

I had temp issues until I discovered only one of the fans was coming on. Something to check if you haven't physically looked at the fans while they're running.
