we had a blast working it out - not sure what's going in with the 2 problems that have popped up, but in an NA engine, it should not be possible to run lean, just because it is able to get more air - it will only pull as much as the cylinder will fill, and the DME should be adjusting for maximum capacity and volume

i am reasonably certain that there is a different problem going on (like a tired )2 sensor) in those cars that just showed up when the engine was able to pull maximum air - kind of like never knowing you had a bad knee until you decide to run a marathon without any training
I had the water in spark plug hole....grrrr...made me miss last rally. Lately my car has been a little sluggish. Cleaned my K&N and pop! It is breathing well now. Never had that drastic of a result, is the air box mod letting that much more dirt in?
The airbox mod (see link above to article, which discusses this directly) lets more air in, distributed much more evenly over the filter surface.
The question was more dirt, right?
Yeah, I guess with the snorkel gone, you guys think that much more road debris is being sucked in from the engine bay? Either way, cleanning the filter more often definitely is worth the gains from the mod.
I don't think there's any reason to assume anything other than a direct correlation between the change in air intake and the change in dirt brought with it.
Since the intake area is greater one would assume lower velocity and hence less debris carried in.
