I'm looking for a second car magazine to supplement Excellence which is of course quite. . . excellent. Car and Driver. . . boring. . . too many minivans and Camry reviews . . . Motor Trend. . . better . . . honestly though, I don't like a bunch of short articles. I prefer less longer articles.



So I stumbled upon Evo magazine. you guys ever read it? A British car mag.



Maaaan it's *really* good.

This is by far the greatest car magazine in the history of time. There is no doubt in my mind about that. These guys are gear heads (or petrol heads, as they say across the pond), no doubt. If I had a ridiculous amount of money lying around, I would use this publication to chose which supercar to buy...and then use said supercar as toilet paper, because I would be so rich that I could do things like that. I mean, some African nations don't make this much money in a year. For $50, it would be a great deal, and I would buy a lifetime subscription (am I being too gushy?). But $157.14? That's hard to justify, and it is the *only* reason why I this magazine is not in my bathroom right now.

I've flipped through Evo in the store and it looked pretty good. I don't know about getting it, though, unless you're really interested in Euro stuff that never makes it here. I used to really like European Car magazine, which was called VW & Porsche before it was European Car. I really liked it when it was called VW & Porsche. Now, it seems to have skewed to a younger crowd that wets itself over body kits and 20-inch wheels. There's still some good stuff in there.



A good British Porsche mag is 911 & Porsche World. It has more coverage of the 968 than Excellence does, I think. I have to admit, though... I'm partial to Excellence.

Sean - it's a matter of personal preference, but I have to disagree with your assessment - C&D is my favorite...the writing is top rate, IMHO, and I like to read about all kinds of cars.

EVO... the best English-language car mag on the planet... and reputed to be bleeding money like crazy.

Christophorus is one of my favorite magazines. Every picture is like artwork and the articles I find interesting and feel they capture the real Porsche spirit. It also comes from the Porsche factory so I feel it is very credible. Again, the pictures are phenomenal.

What about Top Gear mag? It's pretty good, kinda expensive though.

The thing I didn't like about Top Gear mag - and I'm HUGE fan of the TV show, I'm obsessed with the show - is the magazine is, U dunno, a bit snarky, a bit sarcastic. It works great on the show but in print. . . I guess I prefer the middle of the road.

I guess my biggest complaint about Car and Driver is I wish they would have longer aticles. But I think that's kind of outside their scope though. . . I guess they are supposed to be a bit more generalist.



I agree the writing is very good. It just seems like every time I get interested in a C&D article it. . . ends abruptly. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/rolleyes.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

I get Excellence, Total 911 (http://www.total911.co.uk/) and Evo. Evo has the best exotic car coverage over all other published magazines. The photography is also fantastic. I think you will enjoy it. The sell the magazine at Borders you might want to swing by and pick up a copy.

The one thing about EVO is that there's very little cost savings by getting a subscription.



I would suggest not getting a subscription, but keep an eye out when you go to Borders/B&N/Etc. and buy the available copy if its interesting to you.

EVO - I've been a fan/reader for some time now. It's never become more mainstream over here because of its European bias (we don't get most makes/models featured, which means most readers aren't interested because they don't know the cars), and its more expensive (x2) than other car mags. In my opinion, it has the best articles/photos, and the best head-to-head competitions (econo cars to super cars). I love the back pages where they catagorize the cars they've tested over the years, list the specs and provide a brief opinion on each - check out what they say about our cars.

I only subscribe to Christophorus because you can't buy it from the

newsstand.



Panorama magazine comes with being a PCA member. It's ok.



Occasionally I'll buy Excellence and Road&Track.



Evo I remember as Performance Car. I probably prefer Car magazine

because it's more general.

Heh heh, I've still got a few issues of Performance Car tucked away somewhere.

BTW, EVO has had some amazing "long-term" test cars. Aston Martins, Ferraris, Lamborghini, Pagani and Porsches. Lucky bastards.

Let's see... I cut back on my car magazine habit and now only subscribe to

Road and Track (if for nothing but Peter Egan each month-sublime)

Excellence

Panorama (by default from PCA, not a great magazine)

AutoWeek



Each month I buy 911 and Porsche World at B&N. It is actually a bit slower and more expensive by subscription as best I can tell.



I also get Winding Road each month by email and read Jalopnik online each day. Finally, each Wednesday I read Dan Neil's column in the LA Times - he is hands down the most entertaining automobile writer working today.



That is about it, except for haunting Forums, .net, and Rennlist. It is amazing I have any time left to drive my cars!

I still have the issue (Dec 1993) where they named the 968 CS as their performance car of the year:

I subscribe to 911 and Porsche World ($100 a year) as it seems to have more and better front engine porsche articles.... but issues always arrive a month or so after you can find them on the newstands. That really burns me. But they don't sell in in the bookstores around here
