Anyone have a good source for replacement cabin filters. I currently have Mahle/Knecht, but can't seem to find a reasonably priced source on the internet (last price was $55/pr).

i believe kla had some for a lot less

Did you try sunset porsche yet?

I put the KLA's in a previous 968. They are a well made filter, although I don't know what their filtration capabilities are. But they are not a good fit in a 968. I had to shim mine with vinyl tubing on two sides to get a decent fit.

The "cabin filter" (also called pollen filter) is under the plastic cover between the engine and windscreen.

if you look from the drivers side under there you will see one facing the wiper motor (word is there are 2 of them but I have not run across the other one yet. Maybe on the pass side?

Yes, there are two, symmetrically located. The cover pulls off without removing any fasteners.

Tom, I posted the article about making a filter for the cabin air from a HEPA quality furnace filter that I bought from Home Depot. For about $5 the furnace filter is large enough to make about 20 cabin filter elements for the 968. Remove the cover over the cabin air intake and then remove the two wire mesh covers that keep out birds and sticks and leaves. Use the wire mesh cover as a template to cut out the filter material from the furnace filter. Place the filter material inside the wire mesh cover and re-install. I change them when I do an oil and filter change. Good luck, Bob Blackwell.

I found that ACE HARDWARE has a green colored lawn mower air filter that is the same thickness as well as width. I used an exacto knife to cut the old filter material out of the aluminum frame. I then cut the new filter to size and siliconed it around the perimiter.

Fits like a glove.

Sounds neat Brian, is that one a washable filter element? The furnace filter is just a one time use and throw away. Washable element material would be a better long term solution. Good luck, Bob Blackwell.

No, this is a pleated paper element. It was easy enough to do that I did not look for a washable. The washable elements are metal mesh and would probably be harder to cut and trim without distortion.

Great ideas gentlmen. Me thinks I'll look to doing something like that with HEPA material. I like the idea of microfilter material. The lawn mower and furnace filter substrate just doesn't get down to pollen size microbes.



BTW, Sunset wanted $69 ea!!! So its worthwhile for me to tear apart one of my hazmat HEPA filters....

Will do. I've emailed regarding freight (they want as much as the filters to ship to Australia!)



Local Porsche part price is $144 AU EACH (= US $112)



Even with the horrific freight, the Mahle would be cheaper than factory parts here...



The mind boggles. I guess this is one of the joys of owning an older machine. At least the parts are available.

Probably worth noting at this point, in case someone runs out and orders these elements for a car that can't accept them: cabin air filters were a 1994 M/Y change. Earlier cars have a different air intake which won't accept the '94 filters.

These cars can be fitted with filters hand cut from larger filters (as described earlier here), however.

I will be in Adelaide this March (11-24 IIRC) so if you can wait...shipping to california has to be cheaper and I can't imagine they would take up much space in a bag - though from the discussion it sounds like making your own is the way to go...I'll have to pull mine and see how dirty they are.
