I swapped in LED replacements for the bulbs, now that some time has passed you might find brighter ones than what I ended up using, red wedge-base LED bulbs with the pins unbent to fit the bi-pin socket:

I like the idea of an LED lightstrip in this role but did not want to take the time to re-engineer.  If someone knows of a good product for this that'd be helpful, it'd also prevent the bulbs coming loose in the housing.

It's really interesting to observe the bulb warmup time, the tungsten filament lamps take a heartbeat to get bright if dead cold.  Much faster if they are somewhat warm so don't let that fool you.  Having seen this I also put LEDs in the 3rd brakelight on my S8.  The S8 needed a ballast resistor and/or a mix of tungsten and LED to prevent a bulb warning message.

On the 968 after this mod I had no problems with the cruise control as some have reported.

As far as removing the 3rd light, I'd never do it and furthermore if I do rearend someone and they have deleted brake lights or spraypainted them black as some fools do (yes I know it's 'transparent' black but it makes the lights quite dim) I will surely point this out in my defense.  If I sleepwalk into them at high speed it's not like that'd matter but if they have modded their car so it takes longer for me to figure out I need to drop anchor and I can't stop fast enough then they can share the blame IMO.

A couple of lights are out on my third brake light (coupe) - does anyone know a cheap/available bulb replacement? I'm not interested in LEDs.

The OEM# is 99963103090.

I read that T286 bulbs might work but I can't find those anywhere here in the US.

Also tried 2721 bulbs but they're not right.

Thanks!

That's odd, I found the partial package of 2721 bulbs in my parts box, those are what worked in my coupe.
The 2721 looked right, but was loose when installed...

Upon closer examination it's shorter and slightly smaller than the current bulbs.

The only marking on any of those bulbs is "GE 70" but searching for that didn't yield any results.
