Full Version: time for new projects

well, as i wrap up the latest projects and get everything shipped, i am looking to the next projects - these latest ones have been so successful that i have been able to accellerate my plans for the next projects

first up is motor mounts - i want to tighten them up without transmitting vibration - the fluid mounts are stretching in my car, even though they are in perfect condition - between all the mods, and the aluminum flywheel, the engine winds up so fast that it actually jumps up when i trounce it or bang gears (wuite unsettling actually) - i should have a prototype working in 2 weeks - i anticipate retail being under $150

then is the tonneau cover for the cabs - it will zip up the middle, and replace the boot cover, with removeable forward sections

after that, i will be looking into aluminum hat rotors to fit the stock calipers - this is for weight, not for improved braking, though with the reduced weight will naturally come better braking (less rotating mass to stop)

then, finally, i am on to the low boost centrifugal supercharger project - i have already begun working on this, all looks good, and i expect to have a working prototype somewhere around the end of the year (yes, you get to keep the ac and power steering - yes, it will be CARB legal - yes it will be "plug and play", taking about 8 hours to install by a decent shadetree mechanic) - i expect 265-270 at the wheels on 91 octane on an otherwise unmodded engine - at this time, initial estimates put the basic package below $5k - the header package will obviously be more - i have no plans, desires, or intentions to do anything with more boost at this time

film at 11, but i thought you guys would like to know what i have cooking
I, for one, am truly impressed. Perhaps this is because my experience in wrench turning is limited. Heck, I still fear sliding under a jacked car to change the oil. Either way, not many can engineer fabricate and over see production of performance parts. Especially Porsche parts.

Keep up the good work Flashy, I for one will continue to support you when I can.

I’m looking fwd to the supercharger and aluminum hats.

Would like to see- A new simplistic underbody tray (2 pieces made of metal) and optional attached front spoiler.

David
I am similarly impressed and humbled. For me, the most beneficial result of your rotor project will be the elimination of the rusty hat - which even multiple coats of high temp paint have failed to prevent. The tonneau cover is a delightful retro project that may only be appreciated (at least, initially) by us old-timers. The supercharger - well, I think that speaks for itself. Motor mounts - may or may not be for me, I still don't have seat of the pants nearly as sensitive as yours.

Go, baby, go.
Great stuff! The 968 community is really lucky to have someone like you in the ranks. But what exactly is a hat rotor? Never heard that term before.

Also, not to add more stuff to your plate, but any update on finding a spring-centered clutch disk that will work with an aluminum single mass flywheel? Of all the hundreds of clutch disks out there, is there none that has the slot pitch to match the splines of the input shaft to the transaxle, and that will clear the flywheel bolts? With the age of these cars, the DMFs are sure to start dropping like flies in the upcoming few years, and it sure would be nice to be able to go with a single-piece unit with some degree of mitigation of the inevitable vibration. I can't promise anything, but there are several shops here in Austin that have a fair degree of expertise with the 944/968, so if you could let me know the specific issues, I'd be happy to try to help in any way I can. Thanks.

If I understand Flash correctly, he is talking about designing a 2-piece rotor. You would have the aluminum hat section that would have the rotor ring bolted to it. Too bad they wouldn't be PCA club race legal.
You already know which one I am interested in. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Hey Flash,

In your spare time, please come to my house and finish my basement spackling... <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/tongue.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

You obviously have a million more times the drive than I do, and I appreciate your efforts to bring special 968 products to market.
thanks guys - it's fun to be sure - this way i get to stretch the atrofied engineering muscles

cloud - rex is correct - it is a 2 piece rotor - still working on the clutch disk - i think i have an anvenue for that - i'll let you know next week after my meeting with them

rex - yeah - as i remember pca doesn't allow anything but pads without class change

Great! I'll be anxious to hear, as a single mass flywheel is high on my list of priorities.
Flash,

The aluminum hats already exist...I've got a set from Wildwood for my fronts; but, remember I also have Big Reds, so you might be thinking of something for stock rotors.

If so, I appologize...Otherwise, you might want to check out the Wildwood application for some ideas.

Best,

Jason
yeah, as i said above, it is to fit the stock calipers - i thought about wilwood, and will be contacting them first - i've used their stuff on other cars and it worked well
Hey flash, any news on this whirlygig supercharger thingy of yours? <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />
Yea! How about the "whirlygig"........

Cause my gig certinly needs to be whirled.
OK, bump on this thread.......Flash, two piece rotors for stock calipers.......
