I know you guys out there who love to modify and have come up with some amazing ones. Anyone think about taking out the ashtray and putting in a cup holder. i know it is shallow but if something could be retrofitted that had strong cup holders it might work nicely. I mean nobody is smoking in our cars anymore.
Wouldn't the drink the directly in the way of your elbow/arm during shifting?

I got a cheap one at Autozone that wedges between the console and the passenger's seat. Works great, stable and holds two drinks and a cellphone.
There is a cup holder replacement for the cassette tray, but I never considered it since it would be in the way when I shift.
You could probably go into 1st and 3rd without disturbing the drink. Joking of course, I have a tip so when lazy and drinking I could have it in auto mode.
Wait a minute, there are a few of us smokers left. It is one of the only places I can smoke my cigars without getting glares or being yelled at. It is a haven. I don't use the ashtray tho. I wait until the cigar is out and put it in a small plastic trash bag. I do have one of those fip down cup holders on the passenger side tunnel. I also have a fire extinguisher on the drivers side below the rear "passenger" seat. so there!

Cigar smoke is pretty permanent Cos.
1. Wedge.

2. Leave the glove box door open and rest your drink on that. Just like a table top. It's got that cut-out for a cup, and the drinks hardly every spill. Just have to be sure to make smooth turns.

3. But best of all is to just have a passenger (spouse) hold your food and drink for you. That's the best!
Ditto on "the Wedge". It's not permanent, it's very functional, and it's cheap! (five bucks at Auto Zone)
Double ditto on the Wedge. Just put mine in this summer and it's been great.

It's a quick install (jam it in) and de-install (unjam it and toss in the trunk). It also doesn't take as much of the passenger seat as it appears; my right seaters have said it's fine. It will hold most cups well, but water bottles are narrower and tend to fall out on corners (or maybe just the way I corner?). As long as lid's on, no problemo.

Cheers,

Kathy
I recently bought a pretty spiffy (does anyone say "spiffy" any more?) all aluminum cupholder for my 911SC, which would probably work on the 968 as well...

It attaches with a single clamp screw to the front of the passenger seat inside seat rail... sort of slips over it, and then you tighten the clamp... it is in the shape of a paddle, with the large part cut out to hold a variety of drink cup sizes...

Very nicely finished in black anodized aluminum, very solid, and fit the Porsche design very well... I will have to snap a photo and post it for all to see. Now if I could just recall who is selling them... none of the usual "Suspects", unfortunately...

Try Googling Porsche Cupholder and see what you get... the only donwnside was that it wasn't cheap... maybe $40.00, but for a very nicely machined part, it looks to be worth it! And, if you don't want it in place, it fits in the glove box....
i've had a wedge since I bought the car. Very efficient, I use it not only for drinks, but cell phone, Ipod, Money.. wallet. It doesn't look great but it comes right off whenever you want and it's cheap.
This the wedge?
