My dash lighting has worked fine, albeit a little dim since I've owned the car (I know this is common). This week I had a new Pioneer stereo headunit installed. Now the background lighting to the heater and dash doesn't work.



Anyway, here is what I know:

The only thing the installer remembers of note is that he checked the light for the clock, by pressing the elecrtical leads onto metal, creating a spark.

The background lights to the heater and dash no longer work

The dash warning lights all still work

The glovebox light and interior (roof) light still works

The headlights still work

In reading previous posts I had thought the dimmer may have been the problem, however there is no current feeding into the dimmer

I cannot find any blown fuse under the bonnet, but cannot find one specific to background lights, is there another one somewhere else?



I appreciate any assistance anyone can provide prior to taking it to an auto-electrician to pay over the big $$$.

My thought was fuse, but you already checked that. I would be worried about a installer who checks for power by trying to spark a hot lead against a ground. Doing something like that would blow a fuse.

Most Pioneer stereos have a dimmer wire coming from the stereo itself that connects to the dimmer wire in the wiring harness. Maybe while checking for power he removed that wire from the harness and never reconnected it or improperly connected it. That could cause an issue like you speak of. I know it is a long shot, but still it could happen.

I would have them fix it.



Have they not heard of a test light?



Ask for a different installer at the same place. You can down load schematics off the internet print them and bring the print out to the installer. This way he will know what he is looking at rather than "sparking".

Thanks everyone for your help. Turned out to be a fuse. The installer had "checked" them all but not found the problem, I found the "Instrument POTI" (not sure on the spelling) fuse blown. Simple fix and simple lesson, I won't go back to that guy!
