I've never had any problems with the ABS. Works fine under normal street conditions. Perhaps you have a service issue?
I disabled my ABS soon after I bought my car. It worked fine, but I didn't like the way the ABS feels when in operation, so out it came. I've been much happier with the braking since. I did not disconnect any bulbs or effect any electrical trickery - I live with the red light: you can ignore it, or use electrical tape to cover it up. I have a spare ABS "brain" if anyone's interested.
While the abs is very crude it still has value for street or track.

The abs only kicks in under extreme breaking on dry and really upsets the car (on the track anyway)

It does work reasonably well in wet or slick surface conditions. It can keep the car from hooking if one wheel is sliding and the other has grip
