Hello People,

The car was running find and all of sudden the engine just die, thank goodness it die on the driveway.

I got a problem with my 92 968 there is no spark on #2 and #4 wires and can't seem to find any solution

I have replace:

ignition coil

cap and rotor

spark plugs wires and

crank reference sensor

the spark plugs still looks good

With all 4 spark plug wires connect to the engine the engine shake and idle really bad but when

I pull #2 or #4 wire out the engine seem to shake less and idle better.

Any input will help.

thanks

I'm confused by your last paragraph.  How did you determine you're not getting spark on the #2 and #4 wires?  Did you pull the plug, connect its threads to ground, remove the DME relay, crank the engine, and check for spark at the plug?

while the engine is running i just pull the spark plugs one at a time and you can here the spark arcing or not.  And you can feel the engine misfire or not when pulling the spark plug.

when you didn't feel anything during this process, you can most probably take the spark plug wire's from your list  3gears

You might have the firing order messed up on the wires. 3-1-2-4 starting at the top of the cap, and the motor is 4-3-2-1 starting at the back.
Sounds like could be firing order to me too.

I even had a cap with the incorrect order printed right on it.

Also, if u removed injector connections, doible check those too. I have even made the mistake of switching connections between cyl 3 injector and the variocam. Vario plug is a different color than injectors so its supposed to be obvious but the wires are same length so its easy to get wrong
Like I said it was running find with no problem and it just suddenly die that its when I found out there is no spark on 2 and 4 before I replace the spark plug cable. I double check on the firing order.

Does the DME control the spark?

Does the a bad fuel injector cause no spark?
I would check the usual suspects first. Cam position sensor, and DME.
IMO, it can't hurt to replace the DME relay ,as one of the cheapest process of elimination steps, no idea if it affects firing, but it can sure cause engine shaking and stalling,

Thanks your'll for the help.  ok I think I found the problem... the Catalytic Converter went out.  there was a 2 inch  hair line crack on exhaust pipe before the Cat.  And the Cat was glowing orange red which gave it away.  So now I need a new Catalytic Converter,  there is a direct fit for the 968 on eBay

anybody have any experience or recommendation on Catalytic Converter?
Ugh, Flash won't have many good news to share on finding a CC that works well enough to allow the car to pass the smog test ..I'm sure he'll chime in here with his experiences on the topic. Depends which state you live in, but if you buy the eBay item, since it has a 30 day return policy I suggest you take the car for a smog test right away .. If you're in CA, good luck because short of finding a OE 968 part at some salvage yard, not sure many , or any of the aftermarket converters will pass emissions. And I think the OEs ones are NLA, unless Porsche decided to produce them again ..but even if they did, I'm going to guess it'll be over $ 1,000 ..
OK i'm lost here. How does a bad cat cause lack of spark on 2 plugs?

If your car is over 24 year old it is exempted there is no smog or emission test just a safety inspection only. I live in Texas so check ur state guidelines on safety inspection and emissions.

I think the OP's symptoms indicating lack of spark in two cylinders turned out to be a red herring.  To check for spark, you have to remove the plug, remove the DME relay, ground the threads, crank the engine, and check for spark at the plug.

Please fill out your profile, it really help to know where you are and a bit of information about your car.

Yep, if the cat is clogged then it will stop all sparks from firing anyway.  Popcorn

While your down there, replace the oxygen sensor with a new Bosch one. The cat getting clogged isn't a normal thing unless you have really high miles.

I believe there are two O2 sensors on top of the engine, but they should throw an error code. Or is there another sensor on the CC?
Only one O2 sensor in the exhaust just before the CAT, two knock sensors on the engine
Oops, that's what I meant to type, darn spellchecker :-)
